Allen Iverson to Be Traded to Detroit Pistons for Chauncey Billups, Antonio McDyess and Cheikh Samb By C.Y. Ellis 11.3.2008 - Updated on 11.3.2008
| After being smacked upside the head by the million and one rumours surrounding Allen Iverson’s fate, I was a tad reticent to believe this morning’s report that he was on his way to MoTown. It transpires, however, that this one was more than just hot air, with the Nuggets and Pistons apparently having agreed in principle to a deal which will send A.I. to Detroit for Chauncey Billups, Antonio McDyess and Cheikh Samb.
As someone who believed the Iverson-Anthony pairing could have proven fruitful with a little perseverance, I’m a little disappointed to see that Denver have pulled the plug on the experiment so soon. Still, there won’t be too many complaints in the Mile-High City as the deal sends them a Colorado native in Billups and a former fan favourite in McDyess.
Oh, and Cheikh Samb. If you’re not familiar with Samb (or "Cheikh Louch" as I like to call him), he’s a 7’1’’ centre from Senegal who spent all but four games of his rookie season in the D-league. With the exception of an eleven-block triple-double in February, C.S. hasn’t done a whole lot to make the world pay attention. With Denver’s deficiencies at the five, however, he may see a little more action up in the Rockies than he did in Auburn HIlls.
So, what do you think of this trade? Is it a desperation move for the Detroit Pistons? Did the Denver Nuggets give up on Allen Iverson too soon? Who got the better end of this deal? Let us know your thoughts in the comment box.

Posted by sam on 11.4.2008 | pistons all the way, there goin to f-up the rest of the clubs . | Posted by Washed Up on 11.3.2008 | All these players are old and clearly losing a step. It was time to depart for both teams just for a shake up. Detroit is the winner due to getting the cap space. Chauncey was getting out played in the playoffs by Jason Williams, Daniel Gibson, Rajon Rondo. He’s not a finals MVP, Mr. Big Shot anymore he’s just a liablity that has shown the last two seasons. A.I. may or may not workout short-term, as long as he doesn’t jack up 85 shots a game. I’m hearing McDyess wants to get bought out or rather retire than play for any other team than the pistons. Chauncey couldn’t hold the previous mentioned players how is he gonna battle against Paul, Williams, Parker, even Nash. This trade is a wash . | Posted by WHAT DA HELL on 11.3.2008 | the denver ship is sinking!!! lol...nah...its been sinking forever. lets be honest, denver had no leader and no direction. just push the ball and hope talent can win the game. the way they got swept in the playoffs was an embarassment. lets see if Melo "gets his team to the playoffs" without Marcus Camby. then ill buy into his hype. billups is a good fit in denver but i would also want to see them with a new coach. As far as Iverson in Detroit, it could work. Rondo outplayed billups in the ECF and i dont think Dumars forgot. i hate how iverson flops all the time now on defense but his agressiveness on offense will give detroit that shot in the arm that it has needed since coach brown left. . | Posted by J_Franchise on 11.3.2008 | i agree with mike storch the poster under me. i seriously do not get denvers motive for this trade. Ya they get billups and can move j.r. to the 2 but seriously, denver lost all hope when their best defensive player camby was shipped for nothing. If they had still had camby and were able to ship off nene for nothing and iverson for billups/mcdyess, this deal would make sense because they would have j.r. and billups, both good defenders and dyess/martin/camby all good defenders at forward/center and melo, an aspiring defender in the paint. That would have made a hell of a lot better than what they are doing now. Denver might as well rebuild now because they wont be getting a championship anytime soon unless carmelo hasn;t shown us all his potential and blossoms to the best player in the 03 draft as i thought he would. . | Posted by Michael Storch on 11.3.2008 | I don’t get this move for either team. Well Detroit maybe to clear up cap space. But Denver yeah they needed a all-star PG, but adding long-term contracts is weird seeing they gave away Camby trying to slash payroll. Atlease Billups is going back home so he may not be super disappointed. A.I. may buy into a team like Detroit at this point in his career, this will be his best shot to get a championship and he doesn’t want to mess that up. I guess the D felt comfortable parting ways with Billups with the quick development of Stuckey, and also parting with Dyess, seeing how Johnson and Maxiell have played. I remember back in 2000 A.I was close to being a piston but Matt Gieger killed that deal. So this will be interesting to see. I think Joe D knew he needed to shake this team up and make some noise to the pistons and the league that he isn’t fading. With Sheed’s and A.I. contract up at seasons end that gives them a lot of flexibility for the future to make a run at superstar or whatever the game plan may be. I give this trade a B as of right now . |
