Andrew Bynum Becomes Overpaid with $58-Million Extension By C.Y. Ellis 10.31.2008 - Updated on 10.31.2008
| After taking a decidedly neutral position throughout the course of the Andrew Bynum negotiations, I’m now proud to say that the news of his four-year extension has forced me to take a stance. Having run his numbers through my trusty stats-versus-cash formula, I’m going on record as calling him overpaid, overrated and generally a bad investment for Mitch Kupchak and the Legion of D...uh, LAL front office.
While young, semi-healthy seven-footers are hard to come by these days, Andrew Bynum’s value isn’t as advertised. He may have shown flashes of capability in his cameo appearance in the ’07-’08 season, but he still appears to have the footwork of a puppy running on a frozen pond. Where his movements aren’t impossibly awkward, they’re so painfully deliberate that defenders can anticipate the play before he’s even made his first dribble. Seriously, Andy, throw a fake in every now and then.
The deal is worth about $58 million over four years, the Los Angeles Times reported, citing sources familiar with the negotiations.
The deal would keep Bynum under contract with the Lakers through the 2012-13 season, according to the report. The first three years of the deal are reportedly worth nearly $42 million, with a team option fourth year for about $16 million.
"We’re extremely happy to have signed Andrew to this extension, which will secure his immediate future with the franchise," Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak said in a statement. "Andrew has shown a vast array of skills for a player his size and if he continues to stay dedicated and work hard to improve, he has an excellent chance to develop into one of the top players in the NBA." - ESPN
Let’s take a little look at the language employed by Mitch in the above statement.
extremely happy
Ignore that. It’s not a signing statement unless you’ve got some shameless hyperbole in the first sentence.
this extension
You have to read between the lines a little here. That part should have read "this [fucking] extension [that wasted a month of my life]" instead.
which will secure his immediate future with the franchise
Look a little closer.
immediate future
There it is. Whether you call it a subversive dig or a Freudian revelation, it’s certainly something. Could Kupchak be expressing reasonable reservations about this extension? Does he agree (with me) that Bynum has just inked a deal that overvalues him? Let us know what you think in the comment section. |

Posted by LOL WUT? OVERPAID LMFAOO on 11.2.2009 | loooooooool21 PPG and 8 RPG overpaid?loooooooooooooooooooooooool . | Posted by Reyes on 01.10.2009 | I agree. This fool is seriously overpaid. I would have waited til the end of the season or the playoffs for that matter to determine what kind of production was done especially after the surgery. He still had to prove himself an entire season, not 1/4 of last season. That is the dumbest move I have seen. There are proven and valuable players in the league who are getting paid equal or less than this chump. Blame it on the media for overhyping him. Sasha who I think is more valuable player for his defense tenacity and offensive spark got less money than this idiot. Yeah you Andrew. Chinga tu madre for taking more of the Lakers money. . | Posted by Jack on 11.1.2008 | Idiots. Pretty much just threw out their chances of picking up anyone good in the free agent market for seasons to come, and they are overrated as it is. Bynum is possible the most overrated player in the league too. Sorry LA fans you have the most o-rated team AND player. Sucks to be you in 5 years. . | Posted by that one guy on 10.31.2008 | agreed with everything.. is this guys seriously making the amount of money nash is being payed a season.. bynum signing = dumbest move by kuptchak in a while . | Posted by Jason on 10.31.2008 | They’re speculating. Kind of like the dotcom bubble or the real estate market. Will it last a few years? Who knows. He’s overpaid based on past performance, but being paid on potential (i.e., Amazon.com — has Amazon turned a profit yet?). He’s a nice piece to this year’s puzzle, but I agree because I don’t see him performing to the level of his pay — even assuming he stays healthy. On the other hand, I don’t know, if my team didn’t have to worry about salary caps and luxury taxes I might go Steinbrenner on this one, too. . | Posted by ronh on 10.31.2008 | he deserves the money this a title team for the next 3-5 yrs. . |
