Kobe Bryant: I Was Joking about Europe

  By C.Y. Ellis

Well, I guess it was much ado about nothing when it came to talk of Kobe Bryant signing a mega-money Euroleague deal. After reading rumours linking Kobe to Russia and LeBron James to Greece (which we at HoopsVibe covered in detail), many believed there was a real chance that one of the NBA’s big names could make the unprecedented leap from the league to overseas even with the prospect of a maximum contract on the table at home.

Apparently, we were running our mouths for nothing as Kobe has now revealed that any talk of leaving the country for a tax-free fifty million dollars was purely in jest.

Somebody throws us this question about playing overseas. I don’t want him to answer it. He’s a young kid; I don’t want him to take the controversial stuff. I said, ‘Well, if a team throws us $50 million, then we’ll all go.’ …It’s just something that was a joke for us, and people took it and ran with it or whatever. That’s fine. Everybody needs to banter about something.
- Kobe Bryant

He ain’t lying. In the post-Olympics, pre-anything-else period in the dead of the summer, such a story was more than enough to get the blogosphere buzzing. Turns out it was nothing but hot air. Our bad. Move along.

Once a DICK always a DICK. Screw Kobe that’s why you’ll never win it all leading the way, you’re a Scottie Pippen .

Good point, Milan. While people may forget about Childress while he’s abroad, Kobe will bring the cameras with him. With his conditioning being as good as it is, there’s nothing besides injury which would stop him from returning to stardom in the NBA at thirty-three or so. With the shorter Euroleague season, he might even come back in better shape than before, particularly if he takes advantage of the longer summer by resting his legs and getting his pinky fixed.

I hate to tell you this, but I don’t actually have a MySpace page! Either there’s another C.Y. Ellis out there or someone’s pretending to be me. If so, you can tell them they need better heroes in their life.

Money is the ultimate ruler in the world. As long as he’s one of the top players in the world his legacy is fine. I think he’d be more into it, if the Lakers win it all this year. Than he takes a large amount overseas for a short stint. Comes back to the NBA to finish his career in a big market. LA, Chi, NY. But I don’t care really. As long as I am able to watch him play in person, TV, internet,etc.. Also thanks CYE for adding me to your friends list on myspace. PEACE! .

I honestly haven’t decided whether Kobe is the most or least likely star to sign that sort of deal. On the one hand he has the pioneer attitude and knowledge of life abroad to do it, but on the other he’s intensely aware of his legacy. If he thinks it’ll tarnish his reputation, I don’t think any amount of money would tempt him away from the NBA. What do you guys think? .

He can opt out his contract. He doesn’t want to be a distraction to his Finals team. So of course now that the season is coming up he’s gonna come out and squash the rumor. Deep down he was partly serious even though he’s made more money than he’ll ever need, he said it himself any person that turns down $50 mil tax free needs to be knocked out. If he was offered which it probably won’t happen but I’m sure he would think long and hard and would take it. Play there maybe 2 years than finish off in the NBA .
