| Most of my favourite hip-hop acts were popular at one point, and there are still a few dudes in the mainstream I can listen to. Unfortunately, the vast majority of the rappers in the charts these days are straight trash. Weezy, Jeezy, Soulja Boy, Flo Rida, Rick Ross and countless other club rats and ringtone rappers would never have been signed when hip-hop was still alive and well. Now it’s just watered-down, stereotype-enforcing, commercial bulls---that makes fans of the true school of rap embarrassed to be associated with this new take on the genre. I’ll wave the flag for Tribe, De La, Rakim, Dre, Dilla, J5, DOOM, Little Brother, Biggie, The Roots and dozens of others acts who actually made music, but I can’t argue for these rap-by-numbers dullwits who pollute the radio nowadays. That’s why I salute Jay’s new track. Check out the video at the end of the article for an example of real, creative music that doesn’t rely on nursery rhymes and cheap audio gimmicks. If there were more stuff like this being released, kids wouldn’t think Lil’ Wayne et al. were the best the industry had to offer. . |
