NBA: We Screwed up the Call...with Video of Carmelo’s Game-Winner

If, like me, you watched the Mavs-Nugs game last night, you will have witnessed one of the what-the-f*ckiest moments in NBA officiating this year. With the Mavericks holding a slim but crucial two-point lead with the decimals showing on the clock, they decided to deny Denver the opportunity to run a set play for a trey, instead using a foul to force them to throw it in. The zebras, however, decided that Antoine Wright’s horribly obvious hackety slash across Carmelo Anthony’s chest and left arm was a perfectly legal manoeuvre.

As you can see in the clip below, the rest played out unfavourably for the Mavericks, who watched helplessly as ’Melo hit a twisting three that tickled the twine with one second left. When Dirk draws air on the turnaround triple at the other end to seal the deal, Mark Cuban can be seen throwing one of his trademark fits of indignation, histrionically pushing aside a cameraman as he charges to the locker room. Incidentally, the postgame X-rays showed negative for a fracture, although Cuban is listed as day-to-day with a sprained vagina.

In what is becoming an increasingly common move, the NBA issued a statement after the game ’fessing up to the slip.

At the end of the Dallas-Denver game this evening, the officials missed an intentional foul committed by Antoine Wright on Carmelo Anthony, just prior to Anthony’s three-point basket.

Now if we can just get them to admit we needed 2Ball like a Shawn Bradley nude calendar, we’ll be cool.

Check out the clip below and let us know if there’s any way Mark Wunderlich, the ref closest to the play, could justify swallowing his whistle on the deciding play.

Cindy Brunson: This silly b!tch is a great example of why women and men’s sports simply don’t mix. Wunderlich was in a bad position to call that foul anyway. Would the Mavs be whining if Melo missed? And I’d be more pissed with the foul that DID get called in game 4 on K-Mart today against Dirk. .

First of all, joe crawford wasn’t even reffing this game. second of all, that IS a bull**** no call, and there shuda been a foul on the play. if it resulted in a TO, the nuggets wuda been crying "FOUL," BUT, any athlete NEVER shud stop play until a whistle is blown. BIG mistake on the refs, BIGGER mistake on the mavericks. .

that was the sweetest thing ive ever seen. that was rough play but i agree no foul. regular season yes but playoffs no. besides he thru his hands in tha air like he didnt want one. if he wanted to foul, he shouldve hugged him or grabbed him. not go for a steal and jump back! lol mavs suck! .

Wright actually throws his hands up in the air after the "foul", trying to indicate that he didn’t grab Melo. Basically Wright as well as others watching didn’t expect Melo to hit this shot, well now Dallas knows to actually wrap a player when attempting an intentional foul. Sucks for Mavs fans though, but the refs did a decent job. No ones going to call a soft hit like that at the end of a playoff game, its time for Mark Cuban and the Mavs to get some new faces on the team. .

mavs got raped end of story, that was a weak a-------tappp on his chest even tho its a foul 9 out of 10 times ne other time u have to be prepared of a league with the worst officials ever every game there horrible, the calls are always going cleary in favor of one team so wright should of had him to he heard the whistly.......n if you notice every annoucer that says o he’s one of the best refs there always by far the worst ref’s ever, joey crawford is absoultley horrible in every aspect of reffing .

first, yes wright should have wrapped him up. safest way there. refs didnt call it cuz of all the hooplah that they shouldnt affect the outcome of the game by calling a foul. the mavs should have informed the refs that they were going to commit a foul. im sure dallas wouldnt have complained if melo missed. then denver would be mad at the refs. you just cant get it right these days. .

There was no foul there anyway if he wanted to foul him properly he should have held him and not let carmelo just bump off of him, he should have fouled him with more intent! .

Recently, the playoffs are not the playoffs that used to be. The referees are dictating the game. Let’s start with game 2 between Lakers and Rockets. Kobe clearly had fouled Ron Artest by attacking him on the throat with his elbow. Ron-Ron politely goes to the referee and tells him about the elbow incident that happened. Yet, the dumba$$ Joey Crawford does nothing about the situation. Soon Artest got made and goes rampage on Kobe. Ejection was made, and afterwards, the referee starts to give out fouls as if it was dollar bills. They were trying to send message don’t get physical because we are watching. It’s a playoff for god’s sake. It is supposed to be physical, intense, and hardcore. It ain’t a regular season. Last night’s game, Dallas basically loss the game because of the referee. The foul was clearly made on the play yet the referee did nothing... The referees are now controlling the game. In order to prevent this, their should be a referee that watches the video for the whole game. By doing this, they can catch an uncalled fouls as they are watching the whole video situation. Also, if the refs are being unfair, there should be a rule to change referee agreed by the both team. Sometimes the referees are being inconsistent about their calls, which breaks the rhythm of the players. Bottom line: Referees are deciding the winners of the game, not the players. To prevent this, a "Video watching referee" and a replacable must be present .
