Baron Davis drops 29 to blaze past Portland

01.29.2006

Oakland, CA (Basketball News) - Baron Davis dropped a double-double on Portland with a game-high 29 points and 16 assists as Golden State bested the Trail Blazers, 98-83, at The Arena.

Mickael Pietrus and Monta Ellis each added 14 points for the Warriors, who halted a four-game skid. Troy Murphy chipped in with 11 points and 21 rebounds, while Derek Fisher had 10 in the win.

Juan Dixon netted 21 points for Portland, which lost for the third time in their last four outings. Sebastian Telfair tallied 12 points, while Jarrett Jack and Travis Outlaw both had 10 off the bench in the loss.

Davis’ triple from the right wing with just 1.7 seconds remaining in the third quarter made sure the Warriors would take an 11-point advantage, 78-67, into the final frame.

Golden State then continued to extend the lead in the fourth quarter. Ellis’ running jumper swelled the Warriors’ cushion to 91-75, with under eight minutes left in the game.

The two teams went scoreless for over three minutes until Murphy’s bank shot made it 93-75 with 4:03 left.

The Blazers tried to make a move with consecutive buckets. First, Outlaw got loose for a reverse dunk and then Dixon drained a jumper to bring Portland to within 14, 93-79, with 2:53 showing on the clock.

A minute later Ike Diogu dashed any hope of a miracle comeback by getting loose inside for a three-point play that put Golden State up, 96-79, and sealed the game.

The Warriors used a stifling defense to race out to a 26-12 edge after one quarter. Portland settled themselves in the second frame but were still trailing 55-44, at the half.

Davis paced the Warriors with 14 points while Jack and Outlaw both had eight points off the bench to lead the Blazers.

Game Notes

Portland’s number one offensive threat, Zach Randolph, was just 3-of-12 from the floor and had only seven points...The Warriors dominated the boards with a 52-34 edge...Golden State is now 12-12 in its arena this season...The Blazers, who will close a brief two-game road trip in Seattle on Monday, have lost four straight and 10 of 12 on the road and are 4-15 away from home this season.
