No ’Starbury’ Circus: Why the Boston Celtics must pass on Stephon Marbury

January 27 09

Breaking news mixed with analysis …

Their News: A source close to the situation has said there has been absolutely no verbal commitment between the Celtics [team stats] and disgruntled New York Knicks guard Stephon Marbury.

Marbury told the New York Post yesterday that he has an offer from the Celtics should he get free from his deal in New York. Marbury has not played since last April and is currently in a stalemate with the Knicks over the buyout of his $21 million contract.

The source went on to say the two sides have spoken (the Knicks gave Marbury permission to talk with other clubs), and that the Celts would definitely like to add him under the right circumstances. However, the club is not prepared to give him major playing time.

Our Very Quick Analysis: Why would the Boston Celtics want Stephon Marbury?

Forget his history and just consider today. The defending champions spent Monday playing an all too public game of deal or no deal with disgruntled New York Knick Stephon Marbury.

The former All-Star told reporters he had a verbal commitment to join the Celtics after he secured his release from the Knicks. The green-and-white acknowledged talking to Marbury, but denied promising a roster spot.

Hopefully, Boston GM Danny Ainge now gets it. This is ‘Starbury’. After all, the combo guard created a national controversy for the Celtics and isn’t even on the team. If he were signed every comment would become a national headline. And every misstep would become a youtube classic.

Then there is the on-court fit. At best, it’s questionable. Beantown won their seventeenth banner through teamwork and playing together. Marbury, whether with Minnesota, New Jersey, Phoenix, or New York, never put his team first.

Everybody on Boston defends. No exceptions. Problem is the Georgia Tech grad has never been the get-stops type. This limits how Coach Rivers can use him, which, no matter how much he claims he’ll play the good soldier, won’t sit with Marbury.

They already have strong personalities. Ray Allen, Kevin Garnett, and Paul Pierce lead the Celtics. The bench has Eddie House, ‘Big Baby’ Davis, and, coach in training, Sam Cassell. Can they really handle another confident individual like Marbury?

Boston needs a forward to replace P.J. Brown, not a headache. Today, Marbury showed that’s all he is.

Stephon Marbury is a fine man, and knows when to make a statement with his talents. Presently, Celts are up 3-2 against Bulls in terrific playoff series , and Marbury will be a deciding factor in Celtics win of series and eventual title .

Steph has a offensive arsenal, but no defense. very arrogant and selfish. he needs to humble himself. .

Starbury should definetly get his chance, but not with the Celtics. It would just be too much of a risk for them. A team like Miami or maybe Milwaukee could try this experiment... if he is ready to go there... .

Hi Dominic and CYE, I am all for people having second chances and allowing people to buy into team concepts. But it seems Marbury has blown every chance he has ever had and never bought-in to what any coach has ever sold. Sure, Rivers is about the team, but I wonder what impact he can have on a 31 year old man who is so set in his ways. Even the Celtics "ubuntu" team mantra can’t reach Marbury, whatever his motivations may be. If he really wanted to show up Dolan, though he would have given up the extra million in his buyout and gotten with a team by now. Why should the Celts risk chemistry, especially for a reserve guard who will play 15-20 minutes a night at the most? It makes no sense. Thanks for commenting, though. And thanks for reading. .

this would be his chance to prove he can contirbute to a team, and maybe land a future contract somewhere. if it doesnt work out the celts can cut him. .

He is not in it to ball, but to be a baller. Meaning he cares more about making money then playing and winning championships. He has made around a $150 mill during his career. Not having $1-$3 less isn’t gonna kill you. If he really was about playing he would have said fu*k it and accepted the deal. If he was a player that didn’t have a lot of money then of course I could him wanting every penny. He has talent, but it has never gotten him anywhere but bounced out the playoffs and bounced to other teams. Just go overseas and take the money if it’s legit and entertain over there I’ll love him, if they think Childress is da sh*t. .

Steph’s so stubborn he might behave himself just to rub it in Dolan’s face. His best revenge would be to shut up and play, and if Doc can sell him on the "ubuntu" philosophy he could very well manage it. .
