10.28.2006

Boston, MA (Basketball News) - Arnold "Red" Auerbach, who was responsible for bringing 16 world titles to the Boston Celtics and coached the team to nine NBA championships from 1957-66, passed away Saturday at the age of 89.

Auerbach, who was inducted into the Hall of Fame as a coach in 1969, is tied with current Lakers head coach Phil Jackson for the most championships in league history.

The Celtics released a statement saying Auerbach died suddenly in Washington, DC. He is survived by his two daughters, Nancy Auerbach Collins and Randy Auerbach; his granddaughter, Julie Auerbach Flieger and three great- grandchildren.

Auerbach, who also was Boston’s general manager from 1950-84, was first named president in 1970. He held the post until 1997, when he was promoted to vice- chairman of the board.
