Why Denver and Indiana are exploring Jamaal Tinsley trade

October 03 08

NBA news mixed with analysis …

Their News: ``I’ve talked to a couple people - one from the Pacers camp and another from the Nuggets camp - this morning and both sides say point guard Jamaal Tinsley has not been traded to Denver for point guard Chucky Atkins and center Steven Hunter as reported by the New York Post.`` (Indianapolis Star, Mike Wells)

Our Quick Analysis: Right now, no trade. Talks are on going with Denver and Indiana continuing to play let’s make a deal.

Tinsley would give the Nuggets a top-ten point guard. But three off-court incidents show he has baggage. However, Denver is full of personalities, so Tinsley, at just 21 million dollars over the next three seasons, makes sense.

Tinsley’s arrival, if the deal goes through, would be another sign The Answer’s long-term future in Colorado is likely winding down. A Tinsley-Allen Iverson backcourt would be one of the NBA’s smallest. Opponents would expose their size even if the Nuggets favour an up-tempo style.

The Pacers are desperate to move their troubled table-setter. Tinsley has been a public relations disaster and the club wants to cut ties to re-establish relations with the local community. Atkins and Hunter would be cheap, problem-free extras, capable of playing limited minutes in a pinch.

Indiana would get salary relief. Atkins and Hunter are on the books for two seasons, one year less than Tinsley’s pact. Their combined salaries match Tinsley’s contract. Only half their money is guaranteed, though.

However, Atkins and Hunter (as Wells points out) would push the Pacers’ roster to seventeen. The club would then have to make another move.

This specific trade has stalled. Currently, Denver and Indiana are exploring modified versions of this deal. Something may happen and soon.

As a Nuggets, fan, I don’t want this to go through. We need to keep the only 7 footer we have, and an Iverson at the 1 and Smith at the 2 backcourt would kill anything with Tinsley in it. For that to happen we’re gonna have to get rid of Chucky Atkins though. It would be verrrrrrry nice to get rid of Chucky Atkins... Wonder if we can talk to the Clippers about that? haha. .

"Tinsley would give the Nuggets a top-ten point guard." Tinsley is a top-ten PG? I’d like to see your list of the top-ten point guards. .

Sources have told me that the Nuggets will not go through with this deal. Ownership doesn’t not want to take on a player like Tinsley. If they add a Point Guard they are considering going after Damon Jones when or if he is wavied, or trade a future second rounder for him .

True enough, curious to see Howard`s role next year -if he makes the club. The vet has a non-guaranteed deal. .

It’s more a question of filling the gaps defensively. They can definitely get by without Hunter on offence, but they need another option for when they face legitimate centres. When you’ve got Nenê (injury-prone), Kenyon Martin (injury-prone) and Chris Andersen (Chris Andersen) as your three post defenders, you really need some sort of insurance. .

Hi CYE ... Thanks for the comment. I know Denver are one of your teams, so here is my question: does having seven footers matter if the Nuggets run and push the ball? Perhaps, that`s their mandate this year and they can get away with smaller line-ups. And perhaps, this move is linked to the club signing Juwan Howard, too. Just thoughts. Out ... .

The Nuggets would probably pull the trigger on this one if it didn’t mean giving up their only seven-footer. With Camby gone, they only have Nenê, Hunter and Chris Andersen to man the middle. Of those three, only Hunter is capable of playing as a true five, and even he’s listed as a F-C. .
