Why the Portland Trail Blazers Won’t Make the Playoffs By Christopher Sells 12.31.2007 - Updated on 05.9.2008
| It’s been nearly a month since the Portland Trail Blazers lost a basketball game. Let that sink in for a moment. December 2 saw the Blazers lose by 20 on the road to the Spurs. Since then, the young team has rolled off 13 straight victories. It was thought that Portland would still be rebuilding this season, even before they received word that number one draft pick Greg Oden would be lost for all 82 to a knee injury. That hasn’t been the case, as the team is currently in seventh place in the Western Conference, ahead of Golden State, Houston and Utah. To be very honest, I have seen the Blazers play only two or three times this season. Because no one expected them to win many games, the only nationally televised games they have usually involve the centers that the NBA wants to hype against Oden or the matchups against Kevin Durant. As such, I haven’t been able to sit down and form an opinion about the team or judge its current play. I hear from everywhere that Brandon Roy has emerged as a potential All-Star and that LaMarcus Aldridge is a leading candidate for Most Improved Player. I’ve always respected Nate McMillan’s coaching skills, so I can believe that he’s got his squad playing near its full potential. However, I have a very hard time believing that they’ll be able to keep playing at this level and make the playoffs. A few reasons why: 1. They’re in the Western Conference. They’re going to have to keep playing and winning against some very quality competition. The Blazers have yet to play the Lakers and the Suns, and they have to lace them up against the rest of the West’s elite. 2. The Rockets, Jazz and Warriors will not continue to play horribly. Presumably. Two teams are going to get left out of the playoffs unless New Orleans experiences some sort of late-season collapse. When it comes to the end of the season, I have to give the edge to veteran teams that have been there and done that. 3. The Blazers are still the Blazers. All surprises aside, the team was 5-12 before this streak started. Although it’s possible that they flipped a switch and figured everything out, it’s more likely that they’re just on a hot streak and they’ll cool off as the season goes along. 4. Of the 13 wins, 10 have come at home. Before this streak, the Blazers were winless on the road. 10 of their next 12 games are on the road, including tonight’s game in Utah. Not only do I see the streak ending tonight against the Jazz, who are due for a win against Portland, I think there is a slump coming on. I’m sure I’ll be labeled as a Blazers hater for saying these things, but that’s not the case. I think the team has some exciting young players and vast potential. Next season, after they’ve had a year of experience and Oden has returned from injury, I would expect the team to take a huge step forward. Until then, tune in to the Blazer games that you can see on television and watch as they start their maturation process. Just realize that the team you’re watching is built for the future. |

Posted by Luke on 01.3.2008 | It takes a brave man to declare a that a team who has just won 100% of their last 10 home games, and (now with the win against Minnesota) 80% of their last 5 road games will not make the playoffs... If I had have told you a month ago that the Blazers were about to win 13 in a row, you would have laughed in my face. This is not the same team that went 1-9 to close out November and start December. Not too many people believed that Nate’s final year at the Sonics would turn into a 50 win season, not even the Sonics management. These Blazers now have some confidence to go with their undoubted talent. This is a team of over-achievers that don’t seem to understand they are too young to win, which is bad news for those coming to play them. And they just might surprise you a little more yet. . | Posted by Jaybo on 01.2.2008 | Not bad reasoning. The thing Portland does is play defense pretty well—some might say very well. They are a weak rebounding team and give up too many points in the paint; however, their second team and overall team talent is very good. Oden will make this team a champion contender in the next two years. He is the missing link; particularly if the Blazers can pick up Chris Paul or Derron Wiliiams. Laugh all you want but those guards may want to come to Portland to play for this rising team. . | Posted by Ross Verba on 01.2.2008 | You are foolish. Weak arguments. You actually do this for money? Stick to messsage boards and do more research when you write off a team.. amateur. . | Posted by Joe Blazer on 01.2.2008 | He doesn’t need League Pa-------to know that 15 ot their 18 wins have come at home. That’s simply a fact which they can start to deal with this week in Minnesota and Chicago.I think where he may be off is in talking about West vs East. The Blazers have a better record against the West and already have all their road games against San Antonio, Denver, and Utah out of the way. . | Posted by graybeard on 01.2.2008 | You state that you’ve "only seen the Blazers play 2 or 3 times this year".... then you state that "I haven’t been able to sit down and form an opinion about the team or judge its current play." .... and then you proceed to write an article expressing your opinion and making judgments about the blazers? How stupid is that? How stupid do you think we are? . | Posted by JD on 01.2.2008 | My comment is actually in response to Oregon Hoops who earlier said that the Blazers playoff talk should be shelved until they have gotten to .500 on the road. Just a heads up, if you don’t count the 4 most elite teams (Dallas, SA, Phoenix, and Detroit) from last season (which I don’t think anyone is claiming Portland is yet) the rest of the 12 teams that made the playoffs combined for a 214-278 road record. Golden State, which qualified for that all important #8 seed in the West managed a measly 12-29 (.292) record away from home. Translation: Taking care of the home court will get you to the playoffs. Portland’s current .231 winning percentage away from the Garden may not be pretty, but that beautiful .833 record at home keeps their playoff talk off the shelf for now. . | Posted by bfan on 01.1.2008 | Ever heard of League Pass? If you’re going to write articles about NBA teams to be posted for the world to read, you might want to look into this new technology. You can actually watch games that aren’t shown on national TV!!! I know it sounds too good to be true, but ask some of your journalist buddies and I think you’ll be surprised ... Also, what does "they’re still the Blazers" even mean? So what if they were 5-12 before the streak. They’re 13-1 since the streak started. Isn’t it likely that this young team is figuring things out as the season progresses and the team you’re seeing now is closer to who the Blazers really are than what they showed in the first few weeks of the season? According to that logic, Golden State started 0-6, so we should be expecting them to plummet down from their winning ways any day now. Also, please at least admit that NOBODY wins 13 straight games in this league out of luck. It doesn’t matter how many were at home or away, only good teams win 13 straight games, period. Oh, and you forgot t mention that we beat Denver twice (one of which was an absolute thrashing), and Golden State. That doesn’t just happen by coincidence ... I don’t mind you thinking the Blazers will miss the playoffs. It’s a crap shoot for those last two spots. But if you’re going to write such an article, please at least try to incorporate some logic and common sense. Thanks . | Posted by Blazerfan07 on 01.1.2008 | Man coming from a guy who has only seen 2 or 3 games, please. Keep your negative BS out. You and a few other are hating the blazers, never give them credit, what else is new that will never change. . | Posted by on 01.1.2008 | You may be right, you may be wrong.... but I agree that you should at least watch them, or check out some highlights before judging. Also, you should get your facts straight. The first game of the streak was a win IN Memphis. During the streak, they have won in Utah and in Denver. I am not sure they will make the playoffs, but they will finish close to .500 which is an achievement. And, to add to your arguement, which I disagree with, they are further challenged by the fact that Utah has seriously improved itself by acquiring Korver. Nonetheless, it will be close and it will be a ton closer then people thought when the season started. Regardless of all that, they are a hell of a lot fun to watch. . | Posted by Christian on 01.1.2008 | How in earth is it possible that 2nd year players are even considered for the Most Improved Player Award?I think that is just plain stupid, because I expect these guys to get better with a year experience under their belt. The NBA should make a rule that 2nd year players are prohibited from that Award. . | Posted by t man on 12.31.2007 | "To be very honest, I have seen the Blazers play only two or three times this season". Well quit writing about teams you don’t really know about. Do us all a favor and go watch a game before you write about topics you admit you don’t know about. How did you get this job? . | Posted by oregon hoops on 12.31.2007 | Christopher - I agree the Blazer’s win streak at 13 ends tonight at Utah - Brandon Roy’s natural leadership has created a team chemistry not seen in recent NBA history. - Their unselfish team play and communicating defense will be enough to lead the Blazers to the playoffs. - But to be fair to your opinion - I think Blazer’s playoff discussion should probably be shelved - until they climb to at least .500 % winning record on the road. - oregon hoops . | Posted by Don on 12.31.2007 | A couple more thoughts. You wrote, "The Blazers are still the Blazers." Actually, that’s not true. The defenseless and selfish Blazers from the last several seasons are gone. The Blazers from early this year have already PROVEN that they have matured. If they win tonight, they will have 19 wins with 52 games to go. Let’s be conservative and say they win only 50% of their remaining games. That would put them at 45 wins...more than enough to get them in. But I say they win more than 50% from here forward. Oh, by the way, they are now tied for sixth place in the west. And do yourself a favor. Watch them before you judge. This team is very good now. . | Posted by BBALLGAL on 12.31.2007 | Here’s a few more reasons they are going to make it to the playoffs this year. They have already proven that they can play with anyone (Dallas, Detroit, NO, Utah, Denver, GS.)They are one of the best passing teams in the league. They have outrageous numbers of assists. My only concern with the Trailblazers is that they shoot outside shots too often. Yeah, they’re a good shooting team, but they really miss not having Oden this year (both on offense and defense.) . | Posted by on 12.31.2007 | well you still didnt tell me why they wont make the playoffs, maybe why the wont be a high seed... try again in april . | Posted by Don on 12.31.2007 | You’re not a Blazer hater for having a wrong opinion. You just haven’t considered all of the facts. Let me tell you why they will make the playoffs. And a month ago I didn’t think I would take this position. They have changed my mind. I’ll limit it to my top ten reasons.1. They have played the fourth toughest schedule in the NBA. Their schedule becomes a bit easier at this point, even though they will be playing quite a few road games this year.2. They started off 5-12 becasue they were a brand new team. Many of these guys didn’t even know each other last year. They currently have two players starting who started last season. It ALWAYS takes a while for a new team to gel. The amazing thing is that they did it in 17 games. What’s more amazing is that a young team did it in 17 games.3. They have as much talent as any other NBA team...right now. Forget Oden. These guys are mostly high first round picks and are starting to blossom.4. Brandon Roy5. They play less selfish basketball than just about any other NBA team.6. These guys have character. This is the "intangible" that goes into building a team of champions.7. Nate McMillan,,,one of the 5 best coaches in the NBA.8. Even though they are the youngest team in the NBA, they have already demonstrated a blazing (PUN) fast maturation level. This has all the components of a young team continuing to accelerate it’s pace whereas other NBA teams are already as good as they will be.9. This team can shoot as well as anyone in the league.10. This is as deep of a team as there is in the NBA. Their 9th and 10th players could be starting for a lot of teams.Okay...I lied. I can’t limit it to 10. One more. Look at how they are winning. They are smoking teams in the fourth quarter. That is the trademark of a good team...a veteran team. It is an extremely positive sign that they have the maturity and ability to step it up when it really counts. So there you are. I win by sheer numbers (you prvoided 4 reasons why they wouldn’t make it, and I provided 11 reasons why they would). But I’ll tell you one thing. The league had better keep them out now, because they’re going to be perrenial contenders for many, many years...with Oden and Fernandez joining us next year.GO BLAZERS. . | Posted by on 12.31.2007 | they did beat some good teams this year they beat detroit, dallas, utah twice, denver, hornets, raptors, some qualtiy teams. i say they can make they playoffs because they play good team ball and roy should be a all star . | Posted by Deion Edwards on 12.31.2007 | I think you’re wrong on the Blazers. They’re obviously going to lose some games, but I think thwy can compete and hang in there all season long. They could very well win the divison. This is sports and that’s why we play the game. Otherwise why have any if we’re just going to ride people off. . | 1 2 Next >
