NBA Game Summary - Portland at Dallas

02.29.2004

Dallas, TX (Basketball News) - Antoine Walker scored 25 points and grabbed eight rebounds as the Dallas Mavericks rolled to a 111-91 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers at the American Airlines Center. Steve Nash added 22 points and 11 assists for the Mavericks, who have won five straight.

Three other Dallas starters scored in double figures as Dirk Nowitzki netted 21 points, Michael Finley 12 and Scott Williams 11.

Zach Randolph had 18 points and 11 rebounds for the Trail Blazers, who have dropped two in a row following a five-game win streak. Damon Stoudamire added 16 points and eight assists in the loss.

Dallas led by 18 at the half and went up by as many as 22 points in the third quarter. Finley’s jumper made it a 70-48 contest with 11:15 left in the third.

Portland trailed 80-70 entering the fourth and a dunk by Darius Miles pulled the Blazers to within 84-77 with 9:04 to play.

However, the Mavericks answered with a 23-11 surge to pull away for good. A slam by Nowitzki capped the run and put Dallas up 107-88 with 1:54 to play.

"We’re a very confident team," said Walker. "This is a very important homestand for us. We’ve got 11 games on the road next month. We’re jockeying for playoff position so this is the time of the year when we’ve got to jell."

The Mavericks shot 52 percent (46-of-89) from the field, but just 3-of-15 from three-point range. Dallas was 16-of-18 from the free throw line.

Miles finished with 16 points while Derek Anderson had 14 and Shareef Abdur- Rahim netted 13 for the Blazers, who shot 40 percent (32-of-80) from the field. Portland went 5-of-16 from beyond the arc and 22-of-26 from the foul line.

"Fatigue did play a part, but the way we played in the first half also contributed," said Blazers head coach Maurice Cheeks, referring to his team’s completion of a four-game road trip over six days.

Dallas led 27-21 after the first quarter and took a 66-48 lead into halftime.
