Adams is taking over for Marianne Stanley, who resigned from the position last month. The Mystics were just 26-40 after Stanley was named head coach in April of 2002.
"I am excited for this tremendous opportunity," said Adams. "I have always been a fan of the Mystics. I am happy to be part of the team and I am ready to go to work."
Adams spent 11 seasons as a player in the NBA with Sacramento, Washington and Denver, compiling career averages of 14.7 points and 6.7 assists per contest. He joined the coaching ranks in 1999, serving as head coach of an International Basketball League club. He then returned to the NBA as an assistant with Sacramento and Memphis from 2000-2002.
Adams was a standout at Boston College before being selected in the third round of the 1985 NBA Draft.
