Dallas, TX (Basketball News) - Tony Allen poured in a game-high 21 points and ripped down nine rebounds as seventh-ranked Oklahoma State won the Big 12 Tournament championship with a 65-49 victory over 11th-ranked Texas at American Airlines Center.
John Lucas added 15 points for the top-seeded Cowboys (27-3), who won their first Big 12 Tournament title. Joey Graham chipped in 14 points and eight rebounds, as Oklahoma State won its sixth straight game overall.
The victory also marked Oklahoma State’s first league tournament title since 1995, when it captured the Big 8 crown.
Jason Klotz scored 15 points and was the only double-figure scorer for the second-seeded Longhorns (23-7), as Texas had a two-game winning streak snapped.
Oklahoma State also pulled off the season sweep of Texas by winning all three contests.
Graham put the Cowboys up 38-26 on a layup 90 seconds into the second half. But the Longhorns mounted a 13-4 run, capped by Klotz’s three-point play, to get within 42-39 with 14:48 remaining.
However, Klotz’s layup was Texas’ final field goal for the next 13:52.
Oklahoma State couldn’t pull away though, as both squads traded free throws for the next several minutes.
Klotz hit a pair of foul shots with 6:12 left to bring Texas within six at 51-45, but the Longhorns went scoreless over the next 5:16.
This time, though, Oklahoma State put the Longhorns away with a 12-0 run, aided by five points from Terrence Crawford, to grab a commanding 63-45 advantage with 2:02 to go.
James Thomas’ putback with 56 seconds remaining ended both of Texas’ dry spells, but the outcome had already been determined.
The Cowboys shot 42 percent (22-of-53) from the field, while Texas managed to hit only 33 percent (19-of-58) of its shots. Oklahoma State also owned a 42-35 edge on the boards.
Royal Ivey’s layup staked Texas to a 4-3 lead 3:15 into the contest, but the Cowboys mounted an 18-2 burst over the next eight minutes to grab a 21-6 advantage. Ivan McFarlin laid in a basket to spark the run while Allen and Graham scored seven points apiece during the flurry.
Oklahoma State never let its lead slip below double-digits the rest of the half as it held a 36-24 edge at halftime.
Allen led all scorers with 13 points at the half, while Graham added 12.
