KANSAS CITY REGIONAL

Kansas City, MO (Basketball News) - Liz Shimek poured in a game-high 24 points and ripped down 10 rebounds, as the top-seeded Michigan State Spartans defeated the second-seeded Stanford Cardinal, 76-69, in the Elite Eight round of the Kansas City Regional. Kristin Haynie added 20 points, seven assists and seven boards for the Spartans (32-3), while Rene Haynes chipped in with 14 points. Kelli Roehrig also got into the mix with 10 points and six assists in the winning cause. Candice Wiggins paced the Cardinal (32-3) in defeat with 19 points. Brooke Smith tallied 16 points for Stanford, which had its 23-game winning streak snapped. Michigan State won the battle on the boards in the game, 39-30, in addition to outscoring the Cardinal at the foul line, 14-7. The Spartans, who had never made it past the second round in five previous NCAA Tournament appearances, will take on Tennessee in the Final Four this upcoming Sunday in Indianapolis.

PHILADELPHIA REGIONAL

Philadelphia, PA (Basketball News) - Shanna Zolman netted 16 points in leading the top-seeded Tennessee Lady Volunteers to a 59-49 victory over the third- seeded Rutgers Scarlet Knights in the Philadelphia Regional’s Elite Eight round from the Liacouras Center. Nicky Anosike added 14 points for the Volunteers (30-4), who will square off against Michigan State in the Final Four on Sunday. Cappie Poindexter led the way for Rutgers (28-7) with a game- high 25 points. Matee Ajavon chipped in 12 points for the Knights, who dropped to 0-5 against Tennessee in postseason play. The Volunteers won the game at the charity stripe where they converted 29-of-35 attempts, including their last 12 of the contest. Tennessee is now in the Final Four for the fourth consecutive year and for the 16th time overall under head coach Pat Summitt.
