12.9.2006

Memphis, TN (Basketball News) - Chris Douglas-Roberts scored 17 points on 7- of-12 shooting to go along with six rebounds, as 16th-ranked Memphis defeated Ole Miss, 82-70, at FedEx Forum.

Jeremy Hunt added 16 points and finished 3-of-5 from three-point range for the Tigers (7-2), who were coming off a 76-58 loss at the hands of Tennessee that snapped a four-game winning streak.

Antonio Anderson scored 14 points and Joey Dorsey added 10 rebounds for Memphis, which as won four of its last five meetings with Ole Miss.

Clarence Sanders scored 18 points and had five assists for the Rebels (7-2), while Todd Abernethy shot 7-of-11 from the floor to finish with 16 points as Ole Miss’ three-game win streak came to an end.

Eniel Polynice added 10 points in defeat.

The Tigers controlled most of the first half, but let the Rebels go on a late run to get back into the contest and led by just three at the break.

Memphis, though, opened up the second half with a 6-0 run to go up 38-29. The teams then traded baskets over a five-minute stretch until Hunt hit a layup which he then followed with a three-pointer to put the Tigers ahead 52-41 with 12:57 left.

Following a pair of free throws for Ole Miss by Kenny Williams, the Tigers reeled off eight straight as Douglas-Roberts hit back-to-back layups before consecutive baskets by Dorsey and Anderson made it a 60-43 game with 9:28 remaining.

A dunk by Dorsey later extended Memphis’ edge to 20 at 65-45 as the Tigers cruised to the victory.

The Tigers led by as many as 13 in the first half, 21-8 after Kareem Coopers’ short basket, but Ole Miss put together a 9-0 run right before intermission to make it a game again.

Sanders started the burst with a pair of free throws to get the Rebels within nine and later connected from behind the arc before a jumper by Abernethy — his second jumper of the run — made it 29-27 with 51 seconds left.

Then, following a free throw by Anderson, a basket by Williams pulled the Rebels within one. Hunt capped the game’s first-half scoring with a layup as the Tigers limped into the break with a 32-29 edge.
