Appeasing Robin: L.A. Lakers must involve Pau Gasol

March 19 09

Breaking NBA news mixed with analysis ...

Their News:
The furthest the serenely talented Spaniard (Gasol) will ever come to complaining is an acknowledgement of polite frustration after game like Sunday, where he went 10 for 10 from the field in the first half against the Dallas Mavericks but got only three shots in the second half as the Mavericks went to a zone defense that caused the Lakers to blow a big lead, before they pulled out the win.

Then he’ll hint. Politely.

"If we would’ve lost the game I would’ve been a lot more vocal about it," he said Monday after a practice in which the Lakers worked extensively on their offense against a zone defense. (LA Daily News)

Our Very Quick Analysis: It’s a no-brainer. Los Angeles and Gasol will both benefit from him receiving more consistent touches.

It doesn’t matter if he’s an All-Star or rotation player. Anyone who makes all 10 of his first half shots deserves more than three attempts in the second half. Sure, Dallas went with a zone, but the Lakers must do more to involve their post.

This isn’t about one game, though.

Gasol has been an excellent blending star. Of course, he was ‘The Man’ in Memphis and still is the face of the highly competitive Spanish national team. During certain games, especially when he is rolling, the purple-and-gold should appease their Euro by calling sets for him like he was the top option.

Remember, Gasol is playing out of position. The shaggy haired Spaniard is a finesse four-man, but has filled-in admirably at the five-spot for the injured Andrew Bynum. So rewarding his effort with a few more looks wouldn’t hurt.

The Lakers are far more dangerous with Gasol involved. A consistent scorer down low opens up the perimeter and makes it difficult for opponents to smother Kobe Bryant. Also, on the rare occasion when ‘Black Mamba’ looks mortal, there is an All-Star ready to step-up.

Los Angeles is running away with the Western Conference. But engaging Gasol with more touches will enhance their chances at glory in June.

Does Pau deserve more touches? Why. Why not? Get at us in the comment box below with your thoughts and come back to HoopsVibe the Blog for further NBA tidbits. Photo courtesy of . SantiMB .

don’t give him the ball till he mans up on d and hits the gym like EVERY player SHOULD. there’s NO EXCUSE for not being RIPPED when you’re getting millions. of course he’s mega talented and on that alone he should get touches, but effort is measured not by what you’re ALREADY good at; it’s how badly you work on your weaknesses that deserves recognition by getting more touches. .

Oly. I havent seen the Dallas game but cant all but agree with your view.I’ve seen that point about feeding Gasol made quite a few times recently. However, if that really was the case, dont you think Jackson would have already addressed that?Regardless of being overlooked or not, hes been truly impressive so far. Cant wait to see him pairing with Bynum again. No Gasol, No rings (I said the same of a guy called Rambis before \1 .

Hi CR, thanks for reading and commenting. Yeah, we are on the same page. The Lakers are better when they go through Gasol a little more. He has a great IQ and is a great player. Thanks for reading and commenting. .

This is a stupid question and any fan of basketball who has the slightest inkling of how the game is played knows that Gasol needs to be fed the ball in the second half. That is precisely how the lakers beat the celtics on Christmas day. Gasol got late touches for easier baskets that he created with his finesse and length. When you watch this laker team squander leads, which happens about twice a game it is usually because of selfishness and the stubborness of laker’s starters and reserves to not bother making the extra effort(and the extra pass) to feed Gasol. Even if he can’t create a shot fir himself he is a great passer and can often find an open man. Lakers will either live or die based on how they choose to approach this situation. I haven’t missed a lakers game yet this year and it is apparent that this team could have had single digits in the loss column at the end of the year if not for this single factor. .
