Dallas Mavericks Can’t Overpay For Jason Kidd

December 18 07

The Chicago Tribune reports that New Jersey and Dallas are discussing a Jason Kidd trade:

Though both teams continue to deny it vehemently, a rival general manager said last week he’s still hearing talk of a Nets-Mavs deal involving Jason Kidd. Dallas remains Kidd’s most likely destination, but the Lakers are frequently mentioned. The Lakers’ refusal to give up Bynum for Kidd last winter now looks awfully smart. The Lakers have Kwame Brown’s $9 million expiring contract and some young pieces and draft picks that might make sense for the Nets. And, the Mavs have plenty in reserve to make a deal as well.

My Very Quick AM Take: The Mavericks must make a decision: do they stick with their current nucleus or initiate changes.

It sounds simple, but there are many factors worth considering. After all, Dallas’ current roster, with the right tweaks, could remain a perennial Western Conference contender. But the wrong tweaks-like dealing a significant young piece for Kidd-could compromise their future.

So the Mavericks must proceed cautiously-even if they’re tempted to overpay for the Hall of Fame point guard.

Obviously, Dirk Nowitzki and Josh Howard are unavailable. But New Jersey likely wants Devin Harris or Jason Terry included in any deal for Kidd.

Is Harris or Terry too much for Kidd? It all depends on whether Avery Johnson, Donnie Nelson, and Mark Cuban still believe in their young nucleus.

This would be a dumb trade. Kidd is getting old. The only thing I would do is trade Terry with some for useless back up reserves. It’s not worth breaking up the nucleus of this team. .

Not gonna happen. Mavs won’t part with him. Mavs would give up Harris and some others .

who exactly should they give up for Kidd, why the answer is really quite obvious isnt it. the nets looking to rebuild would have any kidd trade starting with josh howard. .
