Phoenix promotes D’Antoni

Phoenix, AZ (Basketball News) - The Phoenix Suns promoted reigning NBA Coach of the Year Mike D’Antoni to the position of executive vice president of basketball operations and general manager. D’Antoni will also continue his role of head coach for the Suns.

"We are truly fortunate to have one of the most respected and successful coaches leading our organization," said Suns managing partner Robert Sarver. "Mike has been an integral part of our success and has been involved in all decision making. He will now lead our basketball operations, supported by the extensive talents within his department."

Phoenix also announced that David Griffin was promoted to vice president of basketball operations and Mark West was promoted to vice president of player programs.

D’Antoni guided the Suns to a 33-win turnaround in 2004-05, as the club went from 29 wins to the league’s best record at 62-20. It marked the third-best improvement in NBA history.
