Sacramento, CA (Basketball News) - The Sacramento Kings announced that forward Shareef Abdur-Rahim will miss a significant amount of time due to a broken jaw.
Abdur-Rahim met with oral surgeon Dr. Brian Royse on Tuesday and a decision on what will be done to repair the injury is expected on Wednesday. No timetable has been set for his return.
The 29-year-old Abdur-Rahim suffered the injury during the third quarter of the Kings’ 105-92 loss against the Portland Trail Blazers on Monday. He scored 18 points and had four rebounds in over 37 minutes of action against the Blazers.
Abdur-Rahim, one of the most coveted free agents available during the offseason before signing with Sacramento, is averaging 16.5 points while shooting a career-high 54.7 percent from the floor this season.
He had started the first 27 games of the year before missing Tuesday’s 110-93 win over the Los Angeles Clippers.
The 10-year NBA veteran has scored 20 or more points in seven games and has posted three double-doubles this season. Abdur-Rahim was the third overall selection by Vancouver in the 1996 NBA Draft.
An All-Star in 2002, Abdur-Rahim averaged 16.8 points and 7.3 boards in 54 games with Portland last season.
