West underwent surgery Wednesday morning to repair a fractured right fourth metacarpal. Dr. Drew Terrano and Dr. Arnold Scheller performed the procedure and inserted two screws into West’s injured hand.
A timetable for his return is unknown. West was the 24th overall pick in the 2004 draft out of Saint Joseph’s and is averaging 3.5 points and 2.0 assists in two games. He missed the first 11 games with a right thumb problem.
In a related move, the Celtics activated forward Tom Gugliotta from the injured list. Gugliotta had been sidelined with lower back pain and is averaging 1.7 points and 2.6 rebounds in 12.9 minutes per contest.
Gugliotta signed with the Celtics in August after splitting time last season with Phoenix and Utah. He was traded by the Suns to the Jazz along with a first-round pick in February in exchange for Keon Clark and Ben Handlogten.
The 34-year-old Huntington Station, New York native was selected in the first round (sixth overall) of the 1992 draft by the Washington Wizards. The former NC State star has also enjoyed stints with Golden State and Minnesota.
