The New-Look New Jersey Nets

  By Joseph Caporoso
10.3.2008 - Updated on 10.3.2008

The New Jersey Nets needed a change. It had become painfully apparent that the three-headed monster of Jason Kidd, Vince Carter, and Richard Jefferson wasn’t going to take them anywhere near a NBA title, so the Nets decided to act.

The movement began last year when they parted ways with Kidd and from what we saw in the playoffs last season, it was a well-timed move. Yet, the Kidd trade was just the beginning of the roster turnover that would take place in the off-season. When you look at Nets roster as it stands today, you could hardly recognize them from a year ago.

Richard Jefferson was sent to NBA purgatory (also know as Milwaukee) in exchange for a project player in Yi Jianlian and a stop-gap player at small forward in Bobby Simmons. They went out and drafted a new center in Brook Lopez, along with a pair of forwards, Ryan Anderson and Chris Douglas-Roberts. New Jersey also dipped into free agency by signing forwards Jarvis Hayes and Eduardo Najera. They parted ways with Marcus Williams, who was once considered the future at point guard and replaced him with a steady veteran in Keyon Dooling.

So, where do the Nets stand right now? Are they just a team who is holding the fort until the full court press is made to bring LeBron James into the organization or can they contend in the improving Eastern Conference? As of today, Devin Harris and Vince Carter are their starting backcourt which is a promising start. Harris is just entering his prime and is an above average NBA starting point guard, while Carter should find some motivation in being the team’s unquestioned go-to player. Keyon Dooling is a good backup at point guard, although they are a little thin at shooting guard with Trenton Hassell and Maurice Ager, although they will be counting on Carter for major minutes

The rotation in the front line should be interesting to watch. Yi will start at power forward and if he can live up to his draft hype, the Nets will have a strong post presence for the next decade. Bobby Simmons will likely begin the year as the starting small forward but will be splitting minutes with Jarvis Hayes and Douglas-Roberts. The Nets would love to see CDR seize the starting position and prove to the rest of the NBA they made a mistake in letting him slide into the second round.

Sean Williams had an encouraging rookie season but the Nets are counting on Brook Lopez to provide some offense at the starting center position. If the Nets were smart, they would start Yi at small forward, let Willams start at power forward, and let Lopez be the starting center from day one; those three along with Harris and Carter are their best five right now. They have plenty of front line depth from Hayes, Eduardo Najera, Josh Boone and Stromile Swift.

The Nets have depth and size. If Vince Carter is in the proper state of mind, they have a legit go-to guy. They have a quality point guard and a good share of young talent. They should be good enough to compete for a 6-8 seed in the Eastern Conference and encourage LeBron that they are just one superstar away from being a NBA title contender.

I totally agree with Yi starting at the 3. Hes not tough enough to be a 4, guarding guys like K-mart, Duncan, or Al Jefferson. But honestly I think Boone should start at the PF, and Lopez as C. PGs: Harris, Dooling, GillSGs: Carter, CDR, HodgeSFs: Yi, Hayes, SimmonsPFs: Boone, Williams, Najera, AndersonCs: Lopez, StroThey’ve got 3 solid players at each position. A few people in and out of NJ here and there till 2010, including VC’s ancient ass, and LeBron, Harris, Yi, Lopez, Boone, CDR, Williams and Anderson will have rings. .

It should be Devil Harris. He’d sound more intimadating. Cuz he looks soft .

CORRECTION: That would be the Mavs’ 2010 (not ’11) first rounder on the way. And, like I said, as likely as not, a lottery pick. .

They’ll have some rough patches this year, and clearly, the roster isn’t all that the organization hopes it will be just yet, but they do have some good young talent which, if they can develop it, should form a strong nucleus.CDR, I think, is going to find his way in this league - a crafty veteran in a kid’s body with a knack for putting it in the hole. Lopez is straight-up big and can shoot - and I think that folks are going to be surprised at his hands and passing abilities. And don’t sleep on Ryan Anderson, seriously, by the middle of his second season, he very well might end up looking like the real steal of the ’08 draft. The club hasn’t done everything right (their record on bringing in complimentary players over the past couple of seasons has left something to be desired) and have had their share of bad luck (see, Nenad Kristic) but the Kidd trade was an absolute heist - with the Mavs unprotected 2011 first-rounder - very likely a lottery pick - still to come. This team should be interesting to watch, and, by the end of the year, the comparisons to the Blazers of ’07 might not be too far off the mark. .

I fixed the typo. For the record, I think "Devis Harris" sounds better.

While we’re on the subject of the Nets, I officially claim Yi as my boy. Every basketball fan gets to take credit for five non-star players in the event that they blow up, and I’m picking Yi for one of those spots.

My bad on the typo...and yes I think the Nets could very similar to the Blazers, although if they win as many games as Portland did last year they should be a playoff team in the East .

good article. I agree with you on all points. I think Nets will be similar to the Blazers last year...no one expected anything out of them but they young and athletic and played hard every night. They could beat any team on any given day. Nets have the depth and size to be a playoff team this year tho it wont be easy .

I know the Nets are practically nobodies right now but I think whoever wrote this could have at least spelled their names right. "Devis" Harris? I thought his name was "Devin" Harris .
