Dunking on Shaq

The Big Witness has managed to avoid being on the wrong end of a poster for most of his career. Somebody better tell these youngsters that Shaq ain't having it.

The Whirlwind [Video Demonstration]

This move is fairly testing, but the results are very impressive. It would be best to practice the motions of the trick before attempting it on a court.

  1. Dribble the ball between your legs to your right hand, and immediately perform a clockwise spin move.

  1. As you are halfway through the spin (i.e. when you have your back to your defender), dribble the ball behind your defender’s back.

  1. Continue the spin, and your momentum should take you in the direction of the ball. Retrieve it, and the move is complete.

Swingball [Video Demonstration]

Move Type: Game

Tip: Make sure to work on this one on your own before you try it in the park. It may appear simple, but many players catch their head in their shirt as they attempt to pull it off.

Notes: Move performed by Rashaun Daniels in Just For Fun Volume One.

Alimoe Crossover [Video Demonstration]

If there's any name you can attach to this move, it's that of AND1's Alimoe, whose frequent use of the crossover has left ballers from coast to coast looking lost. Although effective in most one-on-one situations, it's best employed in transition with a defender facing you up.

Made You Look

Another move designed to make the defender turn their head, Made You Look is a little trickier than your average fake, but manageable nonetheless.

  1. Dribble the ball behind your back for a few seconds and try to draw the defence towards you.

  1. Dribble the ball vertically behind you and catch it between your calf and thigh.

  1. As you do this, fake over the defender’s head with both hands.

  1. As they turn around, drop the ball and kick it at their back.

Bynum crossover [Video Demonstration]

While not much to look at in isolation, this crossover can be beautiful when pulled off cleanly. Former Georgia Tech guard Will Bynum has broken it out frequently over the years, often using it to create space while caught in traffic. Simple to pick up but hard to perfect, it's a valuable addition to anyone's repertoire.

Breathe and Stop [Video Demonstration]

This one is very much illegal, but still a nice move for the street courts.

  1. Dribble the ball between your legs to your right hand.

  1. Cross the ball over to your left hand.

  1. With the ball on your left, straighten up as if to cross it back.

  1. Instead of dribbling the ball, simply drop it.

  1. Lean forward and catch the ball with your right hand.

  1. Pull it back to your right and continue from there.

Baron Davis Spin [Video Demonstration]

If you want evidence of the efficacy of the move, you need look no further than Manu Ginobili, who found himself looking at thin air after Baron Davis turned him the wrong way with this one. Solid footwork and body control are required here, as well as good timing to ensure that the ball isn't exposed to the defender at any point.

Interview with Hot Sauce: Part Three

C.Y. Ellis: Who would you say have been some of your toughest opponents?

Mark Edwards: There's no streetball player that can say, in any of our games that we've done, that have played against Hot Sauce and scored twenty points on him. I've got all the videotapes. I've got five years' worth of footage, and we have not one game where any guard has gone up against him and showed him up. And you know what? I'm looking for the day that happens so that I can tease him, but I can't say nothing to him.

Sauce 2K [Video Demonstration]

Smooth and stylish, this move is yet another to have been made famous by Hot Sauce. One key detail to note is that, after the first dribble, your left hand will not be used throughout the entire trick.

  1. Dribble through your legs from back to front, from your left hand to your right.

  1. Cuff the ball in your right hand and fake across your body in the motion of an underarm pass.

  1. Do not release the ball, but pull it back across your body to your right side.

  1. Without dribbling, swing it back to your left side.

  1. Move your left leg forward and dribble the ball behind it (and through your legs).

  1. Regain control of the ball with your right hand.
