Former NBA player Wayman Tisdale had part of his right leg amputated Monday because of bone cancer.
Tisdale, 44, revealed on his Web site that the surgery was scheduled for Monday. His wife, Regina, told The Associated Press on Tuesday night the surgery had taken place as planned.
"Everything went well," she said.
Tisdale, a 6-foot-9 Tulsa native who played for Oklahoma before spending 12 seasons in the NBA with the Indiana Pacers, Sacramento Kings and Phoenix Suns, first learned he had cancerous cyst below his right knee after he broke his leg in a fall at his home in Los Angeles on Feb. 8, 2007.
The Orlando Magic will unveil the revamped look and design of their new uniforms in a public ceremony on Sept. 23, team officials confirmed Monday.
The new uniforms will correspond with the franchise’s celebration of its 20-year anniversary this season. And if early clues are any indication, the new uniforms will somewhat resemble the look from the past.
A Getty Images picture that mistakenly leaked out of the NBA’s rookie symposium last month showed a blue Magic uniform that featured wide-paneled pinstripes on the jerseys. It is telling that despite the ego-sublimation, as many as five of the Olympians said they wanted to stay on through the 2012 London Games.

Former Portland Trail Blazer Kevin Duckworth died Monday.
The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Duckworth, 44, died late Monday night at the Salishan Resort.
Sheriff’s deputies said they received a report of a person not breathing in one of the rooms at about 10 p.m. Medics tried to revive Duckworth, but CPR efforts were unsuccessful.
Duckworth, who lived in Tigard, was on the coast as part of a Trail Blazers group hosting a free kids basketball clinic and visiting with fans. He was scheduled to take part in the clinic Tuesday in Lincoln City and in Newport.
Moments after the United States’ 118-107 victory over Spain on Sunday, Colangelo strongly suggested he would return: “Look, continuity is important. If you’re a betting guy, you’d say, (I’m) probably going to do it. But it’s not official.”
Colangelo, 68, said he plans to make an announcement next week. His continuing in the job would be no surprise. Colangelo has been talking a lot about the future of the program, about its next steps and no one surrounding USA Basketball and the NBA expects him to walk away.

The FBI is investigating whether Pistons guard Lindsey Hunter and business associates duped a $35,000-a-year boiler operator for Pontiac Public Schools into buying a $1.25-million house in Bloomfield Hills that he couldn’t afford, the man’s lawyer said Monday.
Attorney Michael J. Smith of Sterling Heights said his client, Bruce McClellan of Waterford Township, recently told the FBI that Hunter and Iron Johnson, Hunter’s partner in L&I Enterprises, promised to pay him $300,000 in 2007 to buy the house in the 1700 block of Morningside Way. The deal called for McClellan to hold the house for one or two months until it could be purchased by someone else.
But the purchaser never materialized, McClellan never got his $300,000, his excellent credit rating is ruined and the house went into foreclosure, McClellan told the FBI.

According to former Team USA coach Larry Brown, it comes down to one word: Commitment.
"The thing is they got guys that are willing to make a three-year commitment, which I think is tremendous," Brown said of this current Team USA. "We had guys that committed (for 2004) and then all of a sudden 9/11 happened, and then there were injuries."
The three-year commitment was designed to build unity and also to put the U.S. on equal footing with 2004 Olympic champ Argentina and other countries that don’t have as much talent as the U.S. but had surpassed Team USA in recent years with better teamwork and resolve.

Iranian iconic basketball player Hamed Hadadi has hit out at NBA legal counsel over the recent remarks that he is not allowed to join American teams.

After the USA men’s basketball team blew out Spain recently, the majority of the Spaniards wanted nothing to do with the American media. Considering how Spain got drilled after expecting to be competitive against the U.S. and the racist ad its players were recently involved in depicting themselves as stereotypically Chinese by making their eyes slanted, it was probably best that they kept their mouths shut.
But Spain guard Juan Carlos Navarro, formerly of the Memphis Grizzlies, did come out to talk to the Spanish media for about five minutes in the mixed zone interview area. After he was done with his home country folks, I asked him a question. He responded by saying, “My English not very good.”
I told him, “Well, it was really good when you were playing for the Grizzlies. I interviewed you once by your locker.”
Giricek finished last season as a member of the Phoenix Suns. On Tuesday, the 6-foot-6 shooting guard signed a two-year contract — with an option to return to the NBA next summer — with Turkey’s premier club, Fenerbahce.
"We looked around the NBA," his agent Marc Fleisher said. "Everybody was moving very slowly. And there were great opportunities for him to play overseas for a lot of money. City officials, along with sports-related and business groups interested in keeping KeyArena afloat in a competitive market, have begun working with the state Legislature to secure $75 million to complete a $300 million remodel. The city wants to create an NBA-ready facility with the hope of securing another basketball team in the near future.
According to the settlement, the city could receive another $30 million from Bennett’s group. Suns second-round draft pick Goran Dragic reached a buyout agreement with Spanish club Tau Ceramica and is en route to Phoenix to sign a contract to play for the Suns this season.
Dragic ended more than seven weeks of negotiations with the Spanish club by signing a buyout agreement Saturday night, his agent, Rade Filipovich, told The Arizona Republic on Sunday. Dragic is on his way to Phoenix with a verbal agreement that he will sign a four-year contract early this week with the Suns, Filipovich said. The deal’s fourth year will be a team option.

The Wolves will publicly unveil for the first time the team’s newly designed uniforms for the upcoming 20th season at the IDS Crystal Court Monday from noon to 1 p.m.
The new home and road uniforms will be unveiled during a program that will include appearances by the Timberwolves mascot Crunch and members of the team’s basketball operations.
This will mark the third time in franchise history that the Timberwolves have changed uniforms.

In the letter, which was sent Friday, NBA legal counsel wrote: “It has come to our attention that representatives of Hamed Ehadadi, an Iranian basketball player, may be contacting NBA teams to discuss the possibility of signing Mr. Ehadadi to an NBA player contract.
“We have been advised that a federal statue prohibits a person or organization in the United States from engaging in business dealings with Iranian nationals.”

After drawing interest from a few top contenders, including the NBA’s new champions in Boston, Michael Finley has elected to re-sign with the San Antonio Spurs.
NBA front-office sources told ESPN.com on Friday that Finley and the Spurs have reached terms on a new deal that has been submitted for league approval.
Contract specifics were not immediately available, but sources say Finley’s decision came down to a choice between staying with the Spurs or joining the Boston Celtics as the reigning champs’ replacement for James Posey, who signed with the New Orleans Hornets earlier this summer.
Was this a wise move for the Spurs? Fin might have been cheap, but shouldn’t San Antonio be looking to get younger? New Orleans Hornets free agent guard Jannero Pargo, a valued sixth man, has signed a one-year contract with Moscow Dynamo worth $3.8 million, sources told Yahoo! Sports.
Once again, an American-born player with options in the NBA has chosen to take a more lucrative offer overseas. Pargo is the second NBA player to sign with Dynamo this summer, joining ex-New Jersey Nets forward Bostjan Nachbar. They will play for American-born coach, David Blatt, who was hired to take over the team.
Pargo, 28, had developed into a dangerous bench scorer for the Hornets and attracted the interest of several teams, including the San Antonio Spurs and Atlanta Hawks.

"I guess it’s safe to say I’ve played my last game in a Bulls uniform," Gordon said.
Gordon, who has led the Bulls in scoring the past three seasons, said his agent, Raymond Brothers, has been speaking with other teams about sign-and-trade possibilities.

A Pennsylvania woman who claims Michael Jordan fathered her son has been sentenced to a week in jail for not complying with a court order.
A Crawford County judge barred 35-year-old Lisa Miceli of Meadville from contacting the former NBA star, his family or his representatives. Miceli also had to write a letter promising she would comply.

Jordan sued Miceli this year to enforce a 2005 agreement that required her to stop contacting him after two DNA tests showed he wasn’t the boy’s father. Jordan’s attorneys say Miceli continues to violate the deal, which Miceli says she was forced to sign.

But there’s a difference between being better and being fun to watch. A workmanlike team that wins games is not necessarily a team that is fun to watch. What I’d like the Knicks to develop into is a team that’s fun and that’s colorful and that you really like to watch every night, which is the way they were many years ago. It was fun to watch them, because they didn’t just pile up wins in unappealing ways.

These Americans, who looked so lost two years ago at the World Championship in Japan, appear to have found their Olympic way in China.
Batting away balls or swatting shots on seemingly every possession late in the second quarter, the Americans broke open a close game and went on to a 92-69 victory Thursday night to clinch a spot in the medal round.

Mo Williams and LeBron James future teammates? Bucks, Cavs, and OKC talking trade
Bucks guard Mo Williams could be headed to Cleveland as part of a three-team trade, with the Bucks targeting point guard Luke Ridnour of the Oklahoma City franchise, formerly the Seattle SuperSonics.
NBA sources confirmed there have been discussions involving the three teams. Cleveland is searching for backcourt help to complement LeBron James, and Williams could fit the bill. But the point guard carries a hefty price tag with five years and $43 million remaining on the $51 million contract Williams signed with the Bucks prior to last season, when he was an unrestricted free agent.
Houston Rockets point guard Rafer Alston is due in court Thursday for an arraignment on a misdemeanor drunken driving charge.
Alston, 32, was arrested about 2:30 a.m. last Thursday and released on a $500 bond, police records show. A call to his agent, Dan Fegan, was not immediately returned Tuesday. The Rockets had no immediate comment, team spokesman Nelson Luis said.
With this being his third arrest since he entered the league, you have to wonder how many more chances Skip will get. How should the Rockets deal with this incident? Los Angeles Clippers guard Dan Dickau became the ninth player who held a job in the NBA last campaign to defect to a foreign club this offseason when he agreed to join the Euroleague team Avellino on Tuesday.

Whether Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim’s view of the Nuggets’ offseason salary dump reflects Anthony’s view or is merely an attempt to watch Anthony’s back may be academic. Boeheim, clearly, is in a position to say things Anthony can’t without causing a public rift within the organization.
Boeheim and Anthony are in China as members of the U.S. men’s Olympic basketball team, Boeheim as an assistant to head coach Mike Krzyzewski.

Players on Spain’s Olympic basketball team defended a photo in an ad showing the players using their fingers to apparently make their eyes look more Chinese.
The photo, which has been running as a newspaper spread in Spain since Friday, shows all 15 players making the gesture on a basketball court adorned with a Chinese dragon. The photo was part of a publicity campaign for team sponsor Seur and is being used only in Spain.
’’It was something like supposed to be funny or something but never offensive in any way,’’ said Spain centre Pau Gasol, who also plays for the Los Angeles Lakers. ’’I’m sorry if anybody thought or took it the wrong way and thought that it was offensive.’’
The Pistons re-signed forward Walter Herrmann, who was acquired last December in a midseason trade that sent Nazr Mohammed to the Bobcats.
"Walter is a player with tremendous work ethic and showed last year that he’s a player that can contribute to this team," Pistons president Joe Dumars said.

The Indiana Pacers have the option to extend the contract of forward Danny Granger this summer, but have not opened up discussions yet.

If Kobe Bryant’s recent admission that he’d likely accept a fifty-million-dollar deal from a Euroleague team weren’t concern enough for the Lakers, this should be. Well, that didn’t take long. In a matter of hours, the Atlanta Hawks responded to the offer sheet the Memphis Grizzlies tendered Josh Smith by matching and ensuring the man they call "J-Smoove" stays in the A. Given that both Luol Deng and Emeka Okafor managed to squeeze over $70 million out of their respective franchises, it’s a little surprising that Smith, one of the league’s top team defenders and a threat to average twenty-plus in the near future, settled for a mere $58 million.
Still, with the last offer from the Hawks being a full thirteen million lower, it wasn’t a bad day’s business for Josh and his agent. Likewise, Atlanta can breathe a little easier knowing that it’s possible to keep their free agents in town (and on the continent) without having to hand out the sort of bank-breaking deals we’ve been seeing this summer.
USA Basketball Managing Director Jerry Colangelo believes that forward Carmelo Anthony needs to return to where he was two summers ago, according to The Rocky Mountain News.

The Memphis Grizzlies have sent a contract offer worth $58 million to Atlanta Hawks restricted free agent Josh Smith today, according to multiple NBA sources.
As the only team left with significant room under the salary cap, the Griz have shifted out of a summer holding pattern and targeted the versatile 6-9, 235-pound forward.
Atlanta has seven days to match, per league rules, once Smith receives the offer sheet.
Smith’s numbers have increased in each of his four NBA seasons since Atlanta made him a first-round pick out of high school in 2004. David Stern has to be hoping that the "Peace out" referred to the end of the conversation, not his tenure in the NBA. If Kobe were to take such a deal and play overseas, even if only for a year, it would almost certainly lead to a reconsideration of the league’s salary restrictions. While the league has been happy to mine Europe for talent over the past decade or so, it’s unlikely it would be willing to let an American-born superstar go the other way without a fight. As a consequence, we might soon see the biggest reassessment of NBA money matters since the lockout.
So, what would be Kobe’s primary motivation to make the move? The chance to help globalise the game? The opportunity to break new ground by leaving the league even with a maximum contract on the table? Of course not.

The Lakers and point guard Sun Yue have agreed to terms on a two-season contract, the team confirmed Thursday. The Lakers hope to sign Sun formally within the next few days, team spokesman John Black said.

Sun, known as the Chinese Magic Johnson because of his eye-catching playmaking ability, will face his future teammate Kobe Bryant when China plays the United States on Sunday in the Olympic Games opener in Beijing.

Former Knicks guard Allan Houston said today he is planning a comeback to the NBA. Indiana Pacers co-owner Herb Simon is on the same page as his team president, general manager and coach when it comes to embattled Jamaal Tinsley: The point guard’s time with the franchise is over.

A source close to LeBron James was today quoted as saying that the All-Star and Olympian would consider plying his trade in the Euroleague for the arbitrary-sounding sum of $50 million. This same insider also let loose that CSKA Moscow and Olympiakos - both backed by billionaire owners - have been in touch with King James, although no formal negotiations are said to have taken place.
So, how much of a concern is it to the NBA that there is, in theory, a deal which could send LeBron abroad for a year or two? Multiple sources report that Earl "The Squirrel" Boykins has just joined Virtus Bologna, making him the ninth player to ink a deal in the Euroleague having logged meaningful minutes in the NBA last season. Boykins’ contract is worth an even $3.5 million, making the pint-sized point the highest-paid player in all of Italy.

So on Monday, the Blazers’ 2007 No. 1 overall draft pick who missed all of last season because of a knee injury, began the latest and most significant step in his comeback. He practiced for the first time in full-contract drills, going up against teammate Channing Frye for 45 minutes at the Blazers’ practice facility in Tualatin.
For moments, it was awe-inspiring. Early in the workout, Oden took a long stride and ripped at the rim with such ferocity that the shot clock mounted on the backboard shook for more than five seconds punctuating one of his dunks.

I just got off a teleconference set up by the Pistons with newly signed center Kwame Brown.
He said all the right things, which is what you would expect.
What I found most interesting about him was the fact that he seemed to talk a lot about making his presence felt defensively.

The 22-year-old Smith is a restricted free agent, but there is no indication that he and the Nuggets are going to part ways anytime soon. In fact, I’ve been told by a very reliable source that J.R. is not going anywhere and he could re-sign with Denver within the next 7 to 10 days.
Smith is one of those young players the Nuggets can ill afford to let go. He has had some bumpy times in Denver — not to mention his home state of New Jersey, where he was the driver in a fatal accident last summer — but he showed signs of maturity last season and even gained back much of the trust that George Karl had lost in him during the 2007 playoffs. Does it count as news if everyone already knew it was going to happen? Let’s assume that it does and treat this story as if it’s a surprise. The folks at the not-so-attractively-named Forest City Ratner company have come out and admitted that the schedule which would have seen the new arena for the soon-to-be Brooklyn Nets completed in "calendar year 2010" is "very aggressive".
For those of you not fluent in business-speak, that means that there’s about as much chance it’ll be ready by 2010 as there is of Bruce Ratner suiting up and playing small forward on opening night. While [2010 is] the goal, if it is not met, then it would end up being calendar year 2011.
News broke yesterday that Paul Pierce had been pulled over by Las Vegas police, subjected to a series of field sobriety tests, and allowed to leave without a citation. Now, however, it turns out that things weren’t quite as civil as the initial reports suggest, with Pierce being restrained for a quarter of an hour. Bill Cassell, a spokesperson for the LVPD, claimed that while he didn’t know the exact story behind the cuffing, it generally occurs when "an individual is loudly hostile."
You know when people tend to become loudly hostile? When the police pull them over for something they didn’t do, then proceed to subject them to a series of humiliating tests in public. Given that Pierce passed every single one in addition to a breathalyzer, it’s no wonder he was a little peeved. Evidently, he was deemed sufficiently mad that the police felt it justified a cuffing. “You have to remember he’s a big guy,” Cassell said.
Well, that’s certainly reason enough to slap a pair on the dude. Cassell went on to claim that the Truth "rapidly calmed down" and was released after fifteen minutes. Let’s not forget that through all of this, Pierce was at no point arrested or cited for any infraction. “We don’t cite everybody we stop,” Cassell said. “Sometimes we give just a verbal warning. It’s based on the totality of the circumstances.”
While I’m no legal expert, I can guess why they didn’t cite P.P. in this instance: He didn’t do anything illegal. Still, as long as the police consider DWB a crime, I’m sure they’ll manage to find some way to embarrass law-abiding NBA players while they go about their business.
Honesty or irony? Either way, Kobe Bryant made the following statement when asked if he would consider setting up shop in the Euroleague for the right price: Of course. By the way, are you the owner of a Russian team? It can be arranged for $40 million per year.
Kobe’s currently in the middle of a seven-year deal worth $136.4 million, so it’s not as if he’s strapped for cash. Still, who’s to say he couldn’t be tempted to opt out (he can do so after the fifth year of his deal) if given the chance to earn a tax-free forty million for half a season’s work?
If there’s one thing following the finances of NBA franchises has taught me, it’s that everyone has their price. Now that Euroleague outfits owned by billionaires and unrestricted by salary caps and luxury taxes are willing to pay that price, it can’t be long before we see a top-tier talent make the move.
So, could Kobe ever be tempted by the money? Bear in mind that, with taxes and the shorter season factored in, he could earn nearly eight times more per game in Russia than in Los Angeles. Let us know what you think in the comment box below.
And so it continues. After getting no love from his Orlando Magic during the playoffs or, evidently, contract negotiations, Carlos Arroyo has decided to sign on the line for Israeli powerhouse Maccabi Tel-Aviv. The deal stands to pay him $2.5 million next year, nearly all of which cash he’ll see since the club will likely pay his taxes.
Arroyo’s three-year deal includes the standard opt-out clause that will allow him to terminate the contract after either of his first two seasons in order to return to the NBA. Maccabi, who beat the Toronto Raptors in an exhibition game prior to the start of the ’05-’06 season, were rumoured to be pursuing Miami free agent Jason Williams. Instead, Arroyo will helm the point for them next year, strengthening what was already one of the most formidable squads in the Euroleague.

Following his recent admission of offseason marijuana use, you’d think Josh Howard would be doing his utmost to keep his nose clean right now. Evidently that’s not so, as police in his hometown of Winston-Salem took him in for driving ninety-four in a fifty-five last night as he participated in what was apparently a street race.
Howard was released from the Forsyth County jail on a written promise to appear in court on September 23 to face charges of speeding, reckless driving and "speed competition", a crime the five-oh may have invented solely for the purpose of pinning something else on an NBA player. While he’ll likely get away with a mere slap on the wrist from the judge, it’s unlikely Mark Cuban will be as forgiving. You can expect J-Ho to be traded before the new season rolls around, and it’s likely the Mavericks will give him up for less than market value.
Despite the ostensible acrimony that characterised the end of their relationship, it appears as if Baron Davis and Don Nelson are still tight. Coach Don, who spends his summers bronzing his behind in Maui, was recently asked if he was expecting any visitors. Baron’s coming out next week. It’ll be good to see him. I miss him.
Ain’t that cute? Evidently, Baron has forgiven his former coach for the inexplicable benching in the last game of their curtailed playoff run. The 76ers agreed to terms today with restricted free agent guard Louis Williams on a 5-year contract.

In fact, we’ve been told by two sources that J-Will essentially remains in a holding pattern with a couple of potential suitors. A few days ago, we were told not to completely rule out a possible return to the Heat at a deeply, deeply, deeply discounted rate from the $8.9 million he earned last season.

In what had been a quiet offseason, the Rockets are about to make a lot of noise.
In a stunning move designed to push the Rockets from solid playoff team toward legitimate NBA contenders, the Rockets reached agreement Tuesday with the Sacramento Kings to acquire gifted but controversial forward Ron Artest, according to an NBA executive with knowledge of the deal.
The Rockets will give up guard Bobby Jackson, a No. 1 draft pick next season and another player that the individual with knowledge of the trade could not name. Rockets general manager Daryl Morey could not be immediately reached for comment.
Because of contract considerations, the trade will not be announced until Aug. 14, though that would indicate the deal could include RocketsÂ’ first round draft pick Donte Greene. The Charlotte Bobcats have agreed in principle on a six-year contract worth at least $72 million with restricted free agent Emeka Okafor.
General manager Rod Higgins confirmed the agreement Tuesday to local reporters, saying that he expects the contract to be completed "in the next few days" after an ESPN.com report said the sides had made significant progress in the past week and were on the verge of a deal.
The agreement with Okafor by far represents Charlotte’s biggest expenditure on one player as the club readies for its fifth season. Okafor turned down a five-year deal with a similar $12 million annual average before last season, preferring to wait for restricted free agency.
"It was very important for us to get a deal done," Higgins told The Associated Press. "He creates a sense of security around the basket for us. He’s a guy that I think his skills are still developing in a lot of ways. The Los Angeles Clippers signed free-agent swingman Ricky Davis to a multi-year contract on Monday.
Terms were not disclosed.
Davis, 28, averaged 13.8 points, 4.3 rebounds, 3.4 assists, 1.1 steals and 36.1 minutes in 82 games with the Miami Heat last season.

New Jersey Nets free agent Nenad Krstic signed a two year deal worth $3 million euros per year with Triumph Moscow early Tuesday morning, Krstic’s agent, Marc Cornstein, said.
The salary is the equivalent of around $9 million per year in the United States once you factor in the exchange rate and the fact that European clubs pay all the players’ taxes.
Cornstein worked until midnight Eastern time trying to find an NBA team willing to pay Krstic at least a mid-level contract to keep him in the NBA. But as the midnight deadline passed, Krstic became the sixth NBA player to recently bolt the league for Europe.

Former NBA referee Tim Donaghy was sentenced Tuesday in a New York court to 15 months in prison for his role in the betting scandal that has rocked the league.
Donaghy, 41, pleaded guilty last August to conspiracy to engage in wire fraud and transmitting betting information through interstate commerce.
Donaghy admitted to providing inside information on games to bettors. He could have received up to 33 months in prison, but his co-operation with U.S. federal authorities is believed to be a factor in his sentence, handed down by U.S. federal Judge Carol Bagley Amon in Brooklyn.
