EBC Day Eleven: Pearl Harbor vs. Vezzeo

  By C.Y. Ellis
07.7.2006 - Updated on 07.7.2006

True to the promise made by Boobie Smooth, the second game of this Thursday evening has more worth watching than the one which preceded it. “The Maniac” gives the crowd a reason to stay in the park early in the contest, firing the team up with his endless energy at both baskets and everywhere in between. Despite his best efforts, however, Pearl Harbor are unable to shake off their opponents, and they find themselves barely ahead at 12-11 with twelve minutes left in the half.
Fresh from a timeout and a stern talking-to by their coach, Vezzeo take control of the game thereafter, with forward John giving them their first lead of the game with a turnaround jump-hook and extending it on the same shot moments later. Seizing their opportunity to turn a few fortunate offences into a full-blown run, his teammates pick up the slack at the defensive end, forcing turnovers that thrice become easy breakaway layups. Pearl Harbor make every mistake in the book on the way to falling behind by six, but manage to find a few buckets in transition that make it 32-29 at the halftime break.

PH’s Peter takes charge at the start of the second half, abusing Vezzeo’s interior-oriented defence with a quick triple that ties the game at thirty-four apiece. The Maniac steps up again at this point, reclaiming the lead with a tip-in and preserving it with a block and a board at the other end. Neither team is able to make a decisive move on the other until Peter ices another jumper from beyond the arc that gives Pearl Harbor a cushion of six just after the seven-minute mark.

Pearl Harbor kicks it up a notch at this point, riding the hot hand of “The Re-Animator” to amass a fifteen-point lead with a little over three minutes to go in the game. Although Vezzeo try everything from pressing to leaving two men in the frontcourt on defence to intentionally fouling, nothing brings them much success, and they end the game at the wrong end of a twenty-point drubbing.
