Book Review: If You’re A Lakers Fan This One’s A Must

Book Review: “100 Things Lakers Fans Should Know & Do Before They Die”

HoopsVibe’s Very Quick Call: True fans kill for these types of tidbits. I’m still figuring out how the Lakers were almost called the Vikings.

Book Review: If You’re A Lakers Fan This One’s A Must

Did you know Magic Johnson’s coming to the Lakers came down to a coin toss or that the original Dr. J wore the purple and gold? “100 Things Lakers Fans Should Know & Do Before They Die” is chalked full of fun facts that any true Lakers fan will cherish. It dives into the history of one of the NBA’s most storied franchises and digs up a number of truly interesting facts. Did you know “Showtime” actually  came from a club called “The Horn” in Santa Monica.

To some basketball and Laker enthusiasts some of the 100 things will appear obvious. Talking about the Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal feud without anything especially new to add to the battle ground feels a bit worn and reliving Magic Johnson’s announcement of his having HIV lacks any real revelations other than his wife Cookie slapped him. Yet, overall the book succeeds in providing interesting Lakers tidbits for fans to appreciate.

Perhaps the most interesting kernels of information are the ones about the Lakers’ history. Hearing the inside story on Kermit Washington’s brutal punch that shattered Houston forward Rudy Tomjanovich’s face is both interesting and feels somehow still relevant with the relatively recent viscous elbow Metta World Peace threw last season. It is these more historical moments in the book that truly grab the reader.

The book also dives into the the best and worst trades, biggest team egos, and a little known odd ball Laker named Spencer Haywood. This book is part gossip column and part history lesson all wrapped up in a purple and gold bow. True fans know their teams and no one knows the Lakers better than Steve Springer
