Shaq to Jim Rome: ‘I challenge you to a boxing match’

"The Big Aristotle" is upset over comments Rome made on his radio show Wednesday. Rome said that Shaq's career was not as great as it could have been and that he "never approached the game with the dedication or discipline of Kobe Bryant," his former teammate on the Lakers.

He also added that Celtics GM Danny Ainge made a mistake in signing Shaq.

"Normally, I'm on board with what Danny Ainge does, but not this time. I don't like this move," he bluntly said.

Those barbs set the big man off. Shaq took to his Twitter account (THE_REAL_SHAQ) last night to fire back. "Jim Rome, I am happy with my career and the legacy that I have left behind, obviously u r not happy wit yur legacy I 4got u have no legacy," Shaq tweeted.

The 15-time NBA All-Star then laid out the challenge. "Forget the back and forth Jim Rome, I challenge you to a boxing match, live at ESPN studios, show the world you can back up the tuff talk," he posted.

HoopsVibe's Very Quick Call: These two have history.

Jime Rome is based in Los Angeles. Shaquille O'Neal spent years with the Lakers.

So Rome has witnessed the best and worst of O'Neal. He saw the three championships and World Wars with Kobe Bryant and Phil Jackson.

Rome never, ever missed an opportunity to comment on the soap opera that was the purple-and-gold. And Rome has never, ever missed an opportunity to comment on Shaq's career after he left the Lakers.

For instance, in early 2008, Rome had these thoughts on O'Neal's debut with the Phoenix Suns, which, if you're keeping count, was two teams ago.

(Romie calls Shaq 'The Big Has Been'.)

Later in 2008, the radio and television host even went on MadTV to 'interview'  O'Neal. The end result is rather hilarious.

(The mumbling, full length sweat suit, and questions on Kobe's 'ball-and-chain' is gold.)

With so much fuel on this already blazing fire, the Rome-Shaq beef is far from finished.

The best way Shaq can silence his longtime nemisis is to accept a reserve role with Doc Rivers' squad and help the Celtics raise another championship banner.

Even that may not be enough.

The Boston Celtic Expendables gunning for one more title.

The Boston Celtic Expendables gunning for one more title.

The 2010-2011 Boston Celtics features the stars from the 1990s such as Shaquille O’Neal, Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen, Jermaine O’Neal, and the eventual return of Rasheed Wallace. Either they moved one step closer to a title or hospital bed, the Green Machine remains the team to beat in the East despite Miami’s Super Friends. The Celtics are still the Eastern Conference Champions and until any other team officially knock them out; they remain the favorites to return to the Finals.

Celtics and Shaq will work because of clarity

Celtics fans may get the chance to see how well Shaquille O'Neal's hyperbole or ego mix with a bench role. The Celtics, [a] source said, have told O'Neal that he has to come off the bench next season, and that O'Neal said he could accept a reserve role for the first time in his career.

HoopsVibe's Very Quick Call: Clarity is the key.

Credit the Boston Celtics for telling Shaquille O'Neal - one of the NBA's top 50 players of all time - that he would play a role for the green-and-white.

O'Neal also deserves credit -if he signs with the Celtics and comes off the bench. After all, how many aging superstars have killed their careers by making unrealistic demands?

Last I checked, Allen Iverson and Stephon Marbury are out the league because they had to start. Tracy McGrady's career is almost over, in part, because he doesn't want to become a reserve.

Signing with the Celtics will prolong O'Neal's career and give him a chance at a fifth NBA Title. All he had to do was swallow his ego.

Fans forget how Shaq Diesel used to be dominant.

Fans forget how Shaq Diesel used to be dominant.

A recent Shaquille O’Neal rumor has him close to signing a deal with the Boston Celtics to go on another adventure of ring chasing. It’s sad to see the old man like this chasing these things when he already has four. He is also a shell of his former self. The new generation of fans will probably only remember Shaq within the past 4 years. The long time fans barely remember O’Neal during his Orlando Magic days. Please don’t forget – Shaq was the most physically dominant center in the last 30 years.

Is Shaq a Bieber fan?

HoopsVibe's Very Quick Call: It's official. Shaquille O'Neal has too much time on his hands and no shame.

Far too much time. And absolutely no shame.

Without an NBA contract for 2011, without a focus or goal to train for, the Hall of Fame center has taken to singing duets with teenie-bopper Justin Bieber.

Suddenly, O`Neal`s past musical efforts - like Biological Didn't Bother, I'm Outstanding, and I Know I Got Skillz - don`t seem so, well, misguided.

Hopefully, this isn't the end for O'Neal. Hopefully, he gets another contract and a chance to compete for an NBA Title, instead of competing for the hearts and minds of shreeking girls with Bieber.

Click the link below and watch O'Neal embarrass himself. But be ready to cover your ears when the screaming reaches a decibel that's illegal in 49 states, 10 provinces (we`re still waiting on Ontario to pass legislation), and the rest of the western world.

Don`t Believe Hype: Shaq and Knicks flirting, but not serious

The Knicks have reportedly discussed a sign-and-trade with the Cavs for free agent Shaquille O'Neal.

Reports, however, have O'Neal headed to Atlanta for Marvin Williams. A Knicks source said, "I don't think it would work with us on all kinds of levels."

HoopsVibe’s Very Quick Call: The Big Diesel in The Big Apple would be The Big Disaster.

Simply put, Shaquille O’Neal isn’t right for the New York Knicks. And the New York Knicks aren’t right for Shaquille O’Neal.

Both sides can flirt with each other in the media. These antics are self-serving. Player and team are manipulating the headlines for their own purposes.

After all, Shaq wants to play for a contender. Well, the Knicks – after losing out on Chris Bosh, LeBron James, and Dwyane Wade in free agency – will struggle to make the playoffs in 2010.

Shaq no longer has the Phoenix Suns’ outstanding trainers to keep his weight down and body spry. At 38, girth-filled, and injury prone, he’d struggle in Coach Mike D’Antoni’s Seven Seconds or Less system.

While not disastrous, the O’Neal-Amar’e Stoudemire pairing in Phoenix had challenges. If absolutely necessary, these two could play together.

It’s not something even the Knicks would choose to do -although they may be just crazy enough to rehire Isiah Thomas as GM, so who really knows what James Dolan and his lackies are capable of?

Well, why the rumors?

Shaq is hoping the New York buzz prompts a competitive squad like the Atlanta Hawks and/or San Antonio Spurs to reconsider his services down the middle.

The Knicks, of course, must appear busy. They must appear to be doing everything possible to improve in hopes of distracting the masses from their failed attempts to sign Bosh, James, and Wade. In this respect, the publicity O’Neal generates can be useful.

So the rumors serve a purpose. Provided they don’t become reality.

Foes to friends? Shaq to sign with San Antonio Spurs?

The Spurs are the first choice of free-agent center Shaquille O'Neal, a source told FanHouse. O'Neal is looking to play two more seasons in the NBA. The source said that San Antonio and Atlanta are at the top of O'Neal's list and there is interest from both sides.

Link

HoopsVibe’s Very Quick Call: They are complete opposites –like night versus day, sport utility truck versus European race car, and country rock versus glam’ hip hop.

But these former foes are on the verge of becoming friends. And a partnership - however unlikely the possibility seemed, say, five years ago - would work for both sides.

After years of doing battle during the regular season and playoffs, after years of trading insults on-and-off court, Shaquille O’Neal – once the glitzy star of the Los Angeles Lakers - is contemplating signing with the low key San Antonio Spurs.

Three words for Shaq and the Spurs: get it done.

O’Neal needs to join a veteran-laden contender like San Antonio, where he’ll be held accountable by players and the coach.

What attitude could he cope Tim Duncan, a first-ballot Hall of Famer and possibly the greatest power forward of all-time?

How could he talk back to Gregg Popovich, the league’s resident tough guy on the bench and a former military man?

He couldn’t.

And O’Neal would even have to watch how he treats co-stars like Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili, who have both won three NBA championships.

However, this isn’t a one-sided arrangement. O’Neal – if healthy and that’s a big if these days – can still draw double-teams down-low and kick for the Spurs.

Best of all, he would provide a moxie; a confidence that it’s his inherent right to play in May and June for the championship.

In other words, exactly what was missing from the Spurs’ line-up when they meekly bowed out to the Phoenix Suns, an opponent they used to own, in the first round of the 2010 post-season.

These two former rivals must join forces. They need each other.
