Fantasy Basketball: Who’s The Best Center Dwight Howard or Marc Gasol?

We're just a day away from the start of the NBA season, which means if you haven't drafted your fantasy team yet, you should do it at work today or tomorrow.

HoopsVibe Very Quick Call: Somewhere, Pau is sad he isn't included in the discussion.

Who's the best straight up center – Dwight Howard or Marc Gasol?

As we mentioned in our article comparing LeBron to Kevin Durant, the first thing to consider is the type of league you are playing in; is it head to head or rotisserie? Is it standard scoring, or are there custom settings that make particular stat categories more valuable than others?

In standard scoring head-to-head leagues, players who score a lot but need a lot of shots to get going, won’t hurt you, while in a rotisserie league their low field goal percentage will be detrimental.

For as tumultuous a season Howard had last season, he is still statistically one of the best centers in the game. His 12.4 rpg led the league which was the fifth time he's done that in the last six seasons. His 2.4 bpg was fifth best in the league and slightly better than his career average of 2.2.

But his 17.1 ppg scoring average was the lowest since his second season in the league. Is he healthy? Is his mind right? Do you want to deal with the headache of owning Howard all year, especially if you have to invest your first pick to get him?

Marc Gasol is the reigning NBA Defensive Player of the Year, a prestigious award, but it really doesn't translate to fantasy basketball.

Gasol's statline is nice (14.1 ppg, 7.8 rpg, 4.0 apg, 1.7 bpg, 1.0 spg) but it isn't as gaudy as Howard's. He smokes Howard in assists (4.0 vs 1.4) and free throw percentage (84% vs. 49%). Those two stat categories will either be important or not mean much at all based on how your league scores.

Love him or hate him, you have to say Howard is the best center in fantasy basketball.

Here's a cool video of Howard and Gasol fighting (by NBA standards) over who is the best:
