UConn No. 1 in preseason poll

New York, NY (Sports Network) – Connecticut garnered the top spot in the
Associated Press’ preseason college basketball poll, while Duke earned the
second position.

The Huskies received 67 first-place votes and 1,793 points from the 72-member
national media panel. Connecticut went 23-10 last season and advanced to the
third round of the NCAA Tournament.

The last time Connecticut was the preseason No. 1 was prior to the 1999-2000
campaign. The Huskies then lost their opener to Iowa and eventually finished
20th in the final poll.

The Blue Devils got three first-place votes and 1,667 points. Duke ended the
2002-03 season with a 26-7 mark and also reached the third round of the NCAA

Michigan State received one first-place vote and was third in the poll.
Arizona placed fourth and was followed by Missouri, Kansas, defending national
champion Syracuse, Florida, North Carolina and Gonzaga. The Jayhawks earned
the final first-place vote.

Kentucky took the 11th spot and was trailed by Texas, Illinois, Oklahoma,
Wisconsin, Louisville, Saint Joseph’s, Cincinnati, Stanford and Wake Forest.

Rounding out the preseason poll were Notre Dame, Pittsburgh, Marquette, North
Carolina State and Oklahoma State.
