Report: Thad Matta accepts coaching position at Ohio State

Columbus, OH (Sports Network) – Thad Matta has reportedly accepted an offer to
coach the men’s basketball team at Ohio State.

WCMH television station in Columbus reported that Matta met with school
officials on Wednesday and decided to take the position. He replaces Jim
O’Brien, who was fired last month for a violation of NCAA bylaws.

The 36-year-old Matta spent three highly successful campaigns at Xavier after
beginning his head coaching career at Butler in 2000. In his four years as a
collegiate coach, Matta has compiled a record of 102-31.

The Musketeers finished the 2003-04 season with a 26-11 mark and advanced to
the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament, before losing to Duke 66-63 at the
Georgia Dome.

The news comes just one week after Matta said he wasn’t interested in the Ohio
State job.
