Joakim Noah Ends Six Shooter Celebration Due To Newtown CT Tragedy

In the wake of the horrific Newtown, Ct shooting, Joakim Noah has decided it is time to find a new celebration and retires his six shooter routine.

HoopsVibe’s Very Quick Call: We need more people that look at themselves and find ways to impact positive change, instead of passing the buck.

Everyone was horrifyied by the recent Newtown, Ct shooting that took place at Sandy Hook Elementary school that left 26 children and teachers dead. Yet, what will change? Just as quickly as everyone is to condemn the shooting as a travesty, they are equally quick to distance themselves from it. The entertainment industry instantly went into spin mode to make their new releases appear less gruesome. Some releases were even bumped back a few weeks and months. The gun industry practically went on the offensive insisting stricter gun laws would not have prevented this incident from happening and that it was really a mental health issue. Everyone is always an expert on why their industry is not at fault.

The problem is as astute as everyone is with not accepting blame and deciphering how it is really someone else’s fault, they don’t seem to acknowledge that it only continues to happen and get worse. I am not so naive to believe that Joakim Noah’s small gesture of changing his celebration dance after a bucket to not involve a six shooter pistol will prevent gun violence in the future, but I do applaud his ability to impact change in any small way he can. This is the attitude of self-examination we need throughout larger segments of our society.

“You can’t joke around with things like that. Too many people are dying because of guns. We have a problem here with guns, so (I’m) just trying to be a little bit compassionate about what’s going on. You can’t joke around — it’s not a laughing matter anymore.”

“I think it’s what happened in Connecticut that was really shocking to a lot of people but things like that have been going on,” he said. “We have a serious problem with that in Chicago. It’s crazy, man. You just hear about … the summer and the movie theatre (in Aurora, Colo.); it’s happening all the time. This is just unheard of. Every story is just horrific. It’s just not a joke. This gun thing in this country is no joke.”
