Rondo Torn ACL Out For Season.

Devastation in Boston. Torn ACL for Rajon Rondo.

HoopsVibe’s Very quick call: Does this spell the end of the Celtics’ season? Maybe not.

Initially the Boston Celtics believed Rajon Rondo simply had a hyperextended knee. This is a relatively minor injury and usually puts a player on day-to-day status. Yet, on Sunday results of tests came back and it became known that Rondo had a torn ACL. This is a major injury that can take up to a year to come back from. Torn ACL is the same injury Chicago Bulls point guard Derrick Rose is recovering from.

The injury was suffered in the Celtics loss to the Atlanta Hawks on Friday. Rondo wasn’t examined until Sunday when he discovered he was in too much pain to play against the Miami Heat, a game the Celtics won 100-98 without Rondo. Although it seems impossible, the Celtics actually have a better winning percentage without Rondo in the game. With Rondo the Boston Celtics have won 60.4 percentage of their games and with Rondo they’ve only won 60.6 percentage.

It’s still difficult to imagine how they couldn’t be devastated losing Rondo who was averaging 13.7 points, 11.1 assists, and 5.6 rebounds a game. He was going to be the starting point guard in the All Star game in just a couple of weeks. Yet, the Boston Celtics managed to beat the defending world champion, Miami Heat, without him on Sunday.

“Obviously the Rondo news is tough,” Celtics coach Doc Rivers said after the game. “I knew before the game, but I didn’t tell anyone. Obviously it was pretty emotional.”

One player who will certainly shoulder more offensive responsibility is Paul Pierce. He had this to say following Boston’s win over Miami on Sunday, “We’ve just got to rally around each other. I feel for him, he was having such a great season. … Guys just have to step up.”
